Hey guys, not sure if anyone can help.

My car has been having a few issues for a while.

My engine used to growl (and go in and out - as if it sounded like it was losing power but gained power again every few seconds).

I went to a garage to get it fixed after they hooked it up to their diagnostics machine and it came up with a code whereby the spark plugs and coil and all leads needed to be changed - they were confident it was going to fix the problem, so I gave the go ahead.

Since getting that work done, it only seems to have fixed half the issue. The engine still “growls” and I can hear it trying to stay on every few seconds now only if I’ve been driving the car around for a bit - and this happens randomly, other times it’s fine now.

Also, the engine sometimes stalls when I’m in idle and is linked to this growling sound. The revs sometimes go up and down, and occasionally the engine will stall if it goes below 5 x 100rpm. So, again the work seems to have only fixed half the issue. I’ve noticed that if I put my foot on the clutch, it should stop the revs moving and the engine from growling. Equally, if I would restart the engine, it would also fix the issue.

Another issue is that I can’t really go on A roads or motorways anymore, as the car seems to lose power after going the speed limit. It first happened a few weeks ago, where I was cruising at 70mph for a few minutes and the car randomly started to slow down, I tried keeping it above 70 but I couldn’t, I then went into gear 4 to try to give it some more oomph, but then went down to 60 and couldn’t get it above 60. Ultimately, I was going to lose power until I got to 0mph. I had to pull over, and the engine was shaking a lot. I turned the engine off and on again and it seemed to fix the issue, but it has since happened again when I was cruising at 80mph for a few minutes on the A41. I came off straight away and I couldn’t even move the car off 0 in gear 1 without restarting the engine.

On another note, the clutch has been making the car shake over the last year or so when I get the biting point, it’s quite a violent shake, I’m not sure if this is linked too?

I’ve recently got done the clutch bearings, brake pads and discs, a service, an MOT, the timing belt and obviously the work I’ve just had done in response to the diagnostics test.

FYI it’s a Fiat Punto which has done 84000 miles, 2013 Evo 5dr

Sorry for the long post, just giving myself the best chance to get this resolved! I’m giving the car to a garage which has been recommended to me, but I’m close to giving up on the car soon if they can’t find anything else wrong with it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks guys.

Something causing the sort of power loss you describe should be pretty obvious for a competent mechanic to track down. It may be as simple as a blocked fuel filter. Funny noises are harder to diagnose but if the mechanic can hear them and agrees they're unusual perhaps they can figure out the cause.

Sounds like your dual mass flywheel has failed, so time for a clutch change.
