Hi All,

Was travelling on Duncan Edwards Way in Dudley, and noticed the camera shown in attached picture at the location.

Does it monitor speed, or is it some sort of ANPR only type camera? I have never come across these before at all.

Did you figure out if these were speed cameras or just ANPR? I heard some anprs could calucate average speed?

IMO most likely is local council/HE journey time monitoring ANPR.

Or could be police related looking for "vehicles of interest".

Or if speed camera signs posted in the area then could be speed camera ANPR.

Personally I'd say it's the first above but no way of telling really without inside knowledge imo.

Don't listen to who you heard that from.

I'm curious why you say that. It's very common for ANPR cameras to calculate journey times.

Well, ALL average speed cameras use ANPR, how else would they work?

But, when people use the term ANPR, they are not referring to average speed cameras,
they mean the cameras the authorities use to track vehicles for other purposes.

You can calculate average speed/ journey times using bluetooth unique MAC addresses. A car or person (with a bluetooth device on them as almost all do nowadays) passes a bluetooth sensor, a mile up the road they pass another bluetooth sensor. The speed or journey time is then easily calculated.

The benefit of such bluetooth (MAC based) systems is that they are vastly cheaper than ANPR (number plate based).

Well, many ways to "calculate average speed", but they need to prosecute the driver.
Not sure that is practical using bluetooth, drivers would just turn it off!

Ecall is a better bet.
New cars have Ecall with a microphone in the car, a GPS tracker and a data link back to the authorities.
The tech is there to prosecute for every infringement of every speed limit everywhere.

The ones to watch for are painted yellow

They cost you money if you've broken the speed limit
