I manage and look after two minibuses for a local scout group. The funds are now in place to replace the 2004 LDV convoy, which is in the state you might expect with over a decade of abuse from “the little darlings”.

So my question: Can I sell this minibus to the public as “sold as seen”. I am happy to explain all it’s (many) foibles, but given it’s owned by the scouts, is there any danger of people claiming the Consumer Rights Act/fit for purpose etc. Clearly the scouts is neither a car dealer, nor a proper business.

As LDV’s go, the MOT man said it was the best he’d seen for a long time and they seem to have mild cult following, so if I can add a few pennies into scout coffers, so much the better. But I can’t risk exposing the organisation to any risks from somebody claiming should the clutch give up 2 weeks later (which of course it just might).

I know there are people here with a good understanding who can advise.

I'd be almost tempted to put something in the ad along the line of 'due to the vehicle belonging to a volunteer-run organisation it will be sold as spares or repairs and buyers are strongly encouraged to view the vehicle before purchasing' and anyone with half an ounce of common sense will understand and anyone who starts quoting the CRA or "nose there rightz init" is not the sort of person you want to be dealing with anyway.

I'd go for eBay, 99P start and sold as spares or repair. Whatever you get, you get but you can put in there a list of faults and it's sold knowing it needs work. Best of luck.

If you want to absolutely not risk that then I would think the only things you can do are sell it to a trader or auction (proper auction, not eBay) it.

Would it not be easier to simply trade the old bus in against the new one. That keeps everything neat and transparent, and ensures that you can show you got best value for the group.

Ours was also an LDV (they seem to be synonymous with Scouting!) but a petrol powered H Reg in "slightly wrecked" condition. We sold it to the local pub landlord for a quid because it was really crap and was going to cost a lot of money to keep papering over the cracks.

I'd sell yours as I would any other van to be honest. Bang it on eBay and wait for a lunatic to buy it to turn into a camper van.

It is a low bar.

Ex scout van, you say? Sticker it up with pictures of pedo bear and you may attract the "specialist buyer" market.

We buy any car will take anything, or stick it through the local auction.

Just advertise it as you would anything else.
Sell it as a private sale, which it is.

You will be suprised how much the banger boys will pay for an LDV , popular for van racing . They may be slow and really basic but they are easy to keep chugging along .

Sell it privately/ebay as normal, be honest about ownership etc. I suggest you get a signed letter from one of the scout execs, eg Chairman/Group Scout Leader giving you permission to sell the item on behalf of the scout group and if it's not a cash sale consider any bank transfer going direct into the scout bank account rather than yours.
I assume you've also got a current scout membership card which you can show as proof that you are part of that scout group?
I sold a landrover on behalf of our scout group a couple of years ago and it was fine, the buyer insisted on paying direct into a scout account to avoid me swanning off with the money which was fine, treasurer was lined up to confirm money had gone through before releasing the vehicle.
Hope you get a good price, most scout groups need every penny these days.

Strangely saw at least 3 ex-scout LDV minibuses in Zanzibar over Christmas. Any buyer is more than likely to export, so I wouldn't worry about any comeback.

A bit off topic but you may be able to help

I run a kids brass band and we are spending more and more on hiring buses throughout the year. Aside from the initial purchase cost, how much does it cost to run the buses? i.e insurance / maintenance etc?

Just trying to work out if it would be better to have our own?

Thanks

An absolute fortune. You need somewhere to put it where it wont rust away or get smashed up by the local cool kids and they're expensive old heffers to run. LDV's are ancient now and we were having trouble getting bits for ours (seatbelt buckles kept getting destroyed) but they were popular because you could get a 17 seater low top which nobody else used to make.

The speed at which a group of kids can reduce a minibus to it's component parts is quite surprising so it will get broken in normal use. If you can find another group that has one it might be worth splitting the costs and it can make it more viable.
