Electronic Kit (Yamaha DTXpress 2) Query

Afternoon all,
Quick one, a friend of mine is trying to shift an old electronic kit of his. Since I moved into my apartment my drum practice has dropped off the map as I doubt the other residents in my block would appreciate me playing my acoustic kit, regardless of the time of day.
The kit in question (if you haven't read the thread title) is a Yamaha DTXpress 2. I know next to nothing about electronic drums, apart from the fact this kit is from the early 00's; he's insisting on giving me the kit for nothing but I'm going to at least give him beer money.
Are parts on these kits upgradable? I know this particular model is no longer produced, over time would I be able to swap out the pads and module for newer items or is this tech so old now that nothing would be compatible?

The pads are pretty interchangeable. The DTX2 has rubber pads, so mesh upgrades are worth doing to dampen the strike sound, but your main problem will be the module itself and the limited sound available on that. that’s if you want it for any more than practise, that is; it’ll be fine for that but I wouldn’t want to use it to gig with!
I think (think!!) it’s a straight Jack-to-Jack connection for the pads and cymbals on that one, so any Yamaha pads will work with the module, but you will find the dual/triple zone cymbals don’t work. Or, they will work, but you won’t get the 2nd and 3rd choke and bell out of it, just a straight strike sound.
The kick drum and hi-hat were stand alone pedals on old Yamaha kits, so you won’t have a hi-hat stand or bass drum and the feel from them is nothing like genuine hardware. Also, the hi-hats are prone to filling with dust which blocks up the contacts!
Overall, good kits to knock about with a bit. Neighbours will appreciate a mesh upgrade, but don’t rely on it to see you for much more than that

This kit will be purely for home practice. The last time I used an electronic kit was when studying music at university (around the time this kit was produced) and I really disliked them. I'm a bit more open minded nowadays and the need to have a 'quiet' practice has made an electric kit more appealing over the past few years.
I'll start with this one and see how I like it before committing to anything more costly.
