Engine replacement

I'm contemplating buying an Old 1982 "S" which currently has the 2.9l engine....this may be a stupid question but will the chimeara V8 engine fit into the same chassis...as I want to perk it up a bit as it needs total restoration

From what I can gather no as the chasis as different.....

However I believe you could drop a ford cosworth 24v lump straight in.....

Not to sure if 'straight in' is the way I would word it. Looked into this for mine and I don't think it's a straight forward swap - adapter plate required for gear box, some jiggery pokery with the electrics (ECU is for auto box) and will need some custom made exhaust manifolds.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong on the not straight forward bit - but looked like it could get expensive and be a lot of hassle to do.

Needless to say I'm looking at doing something different - don't know what yet though!

Er, from what I have been told, the Cosworth engine is no straightforward swap. And the V8 would probably be worse.

However, I don't think doing either would be a good idea, for iirc the pre-S4C chassis can't handle the extra torque anyway...

Agreed it is not remotely sensible, but don't let that put you off if you enjoy an engineering challenge. I don't think the chassis is a fundamental limiting factor, yes it is weaker than the S4/V8S chassis but not dramatically weaker. With minor alterations the V8S chassis seems good for 400 lb-ft or so. You will need to work on the handling, sort the brakes out, uprate the transmission throughout etc but these things are all possible if you have sufficient time or money to throw at it. But putting my 'sensible' hat on for a moment, if you just fancy the extra performance don't even think about it, trade it in for a faster model and save yourself a lot of time, money and grief.

Everybody knows that the 1982 S Limited edition was fitted with the 27 litre merlin engine.
