I do love a nice supermoto. I like to think they are safer as you are less likely to do much over 90mph on them for long whereas a sports bike might encourage you to overtake more and exceed 100 mph and much more.
I would like to think they are fun at national speed limit speeds.
Is there any evidence that they are safer?

I have a 690 SMCR and love it. Its safer in that it stops very well, is upright so I have great visibility and has had enough before getting to big speeds. You can easily be very silly on these things though..
If you're going to build your own then a Honda 650R would be good or possibly a DRZ400.

Keep flipping backwards and forwards on whether to sell the KTM 300 EXC TPI or supermoto it. Summer is coming and very tempted to keep it for b-road country lane 30-60mph fun. Not sure you would want to push harder than that on one of them. Upside you can flip them back to enduro easily enough within a couple of hours. In fact typing this i think i have just decided i will keep it...
I had a CCM644 with the Suzuki engine. A ready made supermoto but it was a bit heavy compared to mates Aprilia SXV and Husky 510
Was great fun, looked nice, sounded good and was a great laugh with a few others on them.
Tank size was quite small so short range, but on the twisty back roads it was proper fun.
Lost a lad on a gsxr into a hedge when he was trying to keep up on the bends

Sold it as everyone switched to Enduro's.
My dad recently bought it back and is doing a full rebuild....hoping to get it back again once he's done!

That’s kind of what I thought, better vis and lower speedsIf you're going to build your own then a Honda 650R would be good or possibly a DRZ400.
I've had a number of supermotos and loved them all , some more than others.
A Husaberg that I could only last 45 mins on before losing feeling from the waist down.
A Husky SM610 that would produce a huge beaming smile when you made it to your destination, then sweat as you crept up on it in the hope it would start for the ride home.
The best of all though was the 690SMCR I have recently sold. Awesome bike, well built, light, fun, grunty (especially with the PC5, pipe & induction kit) but it certainly did encourage hooligan behaviour.
I was using it for a 125km e/w commute twice a week but a new road has opened taking 20min off journey so I just drive now.

Talon hubs, rebuilt with stainless spokes. Conti Attack SM tyres. 320mm disc on the front. LeiVince silencer. Renthal bars. Ascerbis handguards. Anodised shorty levers. Trailtech speedo/tacho. Stainless bolts throughout (not cheap!). Rebuilt suspension front and rear. Converted the auto decomp to manual (using XT500 clutch perch and switch). Anodised rear master reservoir cover.
Otherwise it was a complete nut and bolt strip and rebuild, powder coated frame etc, carb rebuild (they are fickle).
I think that’s about it but I might have forgotten a few odds and sods.
It’s been a labour of love and I’m delighted with the end result. The beauty is I can put the enduro wheels back and and blast the hills if I feel the need too.
