Tax exempt

My car was first registered in August 1979, so I assumed it would be tax exempt this year (due for renewal in april). The Gov website is saying vehicles registered before 1st Jan 1979 are exempt.
So even though my vehicle is 40 years old it seems to be not exempt is this correct?

The rolling exemption kicks in on 1st April, so you should be OK come the end of this month. i.e. from 01/04/2020 vehicles built prior to 01/01/1980 become exempt.

My local Post Office were very good, taxed car at zero rate and the V5 to send off to DVLA, took just a few minutes. New V5 arrived a few days later. You just need to wait until April 1st.

The difficulty you'll have is finding a post office that know what they are doing. It took me three goes before I got one that were clued up on the process.

No, assuming general conditions re 40 year exemption apply (ie issue re modifications etc). There is (was?) a form to fill out to state exempt (can't recall the number) but the PO didn't want it.

Having said that, obtaining the form showed the difference in approach of staff; having queued at a larger post office and asking for the mot-exemption form, even quoting the number, the middle-aged male member of staff replied 'we don't do them, you'll have to get one from DVLA'.

I queried it and he was adamant. With that, a young female staff member overheard, clarified what I was after and reached behind the first staff member and pulled out a couple of the forms from their racking system and handed them to me.
