Hi,

I’m thinking of getting an iPace and getting a charger fitted inside in my workshop for overnight charging.

Anybody had any thoughts on this as there have been a few cases of Tesla’s going up in flames, admittedly not many and I haven’t heard of any iPace issues but there has been scares with mobile phones and laptops too....

Just wondering if “indoor” charging is discouraged??

Thanks

If you put the charger near the door you keep the option of charging the car outside

I know people who charge inside and I’ve used a charger inside a garage when visiting people

I haven’t given it much thought beyond that, though the more I think about it, the more the idea of charging inside seems less preferable to me

Think about which way you like to park too because the iPace charge port is on the side and you don't want 15m of cable trailing around.

I wouldn't worry about it catching fire any more than your fossil car with it's tank full of flammable liquid, spark generators and extremely hot engine block. Actually you are probably at greater risk of accidentally gassing yourself to death with the CO2 emissions.

I like the idea of everything being secure and locked up inside but wasn’t sure if it was common to have the charger inside

I agree with 100% about the existing risks, I’ll happily park my hot TVR in there and plug in a trickle charger, with a tank full of petrol.... 😳

Good points regarding placement of the charger, I’ve got a plan for that and Luckily the charger would be close to the consumer unit

I could easily get the charger mounted outside but then the cars going to be parked outside most of the time

I have my charger inside (been over four years now - i3 to start with, iPace now) and sleep well with no worries about fire. Entirely fine to have the charger and car inside

Thanks - how do you find the iPace? Happy with it?

99% of the time i’ll be able to charge up at home in the evening so I’m actually not too concerned about range anxiety

Tesla fires make the news because they are so rare, petrol/diesel cars catch on fire all the time.

Not aware of any iPace fires (thought heres only a few tens of thousands of them) , 1 model 3 fire in total afik (no idea on cause), 1 leaf fire (not battery related). Afik both the kona and the taycan have had one car catch fire and whilst in garages.

I wouldnt worry about it in particular.
