Toying with Tag..... quartz or auto?
Discussion
(Nice) horns of a dilemma.
After an unfortunate experience with Tissot (never again), I'm in the market for a new watch.
I've been looking at a Tag Calibre 16 or a Formula 1.
Calibre 16 is automatic (as you most probably know!) - https://www.pleasanceandharper.co.uk/product/tag-h...
Formula 1 is quartz (edited due to brain fart) - https://www.pleasanceandharper.co.uk/product/tag-h...
There's about £1k difference between them, and I have no issue buying the auto, BUT I can't help but think that is it actually worth it for "just" a Tag?
Would I be better off buying the "cheaper" F1 and putting the extra £1k towards another purchase? Or go b@lls-out for an auto?
Nice problem to have, admittedly, but I want to get it right.
Thanks in advance,
Dan

An automatic is much more money because of the extra work needed to make the movement in comparison to a Quartz movement.
If all you see if the watch itself and not interested in what is inside, then the quartz is actually a much better option. Keeps much better time accuracy for a start!
But you would be crazy to spend £1500 on a mass produced quartz watch.
I have nothing against Tag Heuer, I had a couple myself when I was younger but you soon realise that they are over priced for what you get.
Walk out of the shop with it at retail and you'll be lucky to get 1/2 of that money back if you ever need to sell it.

I'm glad you are looking for an Automatic, justifies the high price (somewhat) but you will still drop 50% on that Tag out of the door.
The marketing team for Tag have been extremely successful in placing the Tag brand in the right places and thus create a huge demand for the product.
In the UK especially, we are very limited to what we can buy that is entry level and Swiss Made.
Add on the fact that you want a Chrono too, then your money doesn't go far....
If you don't need a chrono, then there are loads of Swiss Made 3 Handers for the £500-£900 range. Brands you may not of heard of here in the UK but big brands in other countries.

If you don't think the Tag brand justifies the money for the auto, why not find a brand that does?
Also if you don't think it's worth the extra 1k for the auto, the quartz looks even worse value to me.
For around the money you are looking to spend there is tons on the used market that you might feel is worth the entry price. Seamaster chrono or a Speedmaster for example.

If you like it just get whichever one you like. Pretty much everything we buy loses money so why worry. I’ve just bought a tag f1 red bull edition one because I think it looks really nice, don’t care what anyone else thinks that I bought a tag and not value for money etc, it’s me who wears it and looks at it.
With regards to losing money I bought a tag 16 years ago for £1100 and just sold it when I got this new one and got £300 for it. So losing £800 over 16 years isn’t that bad. I’ve lost a lot more on cars, tv’s, phones etc.

We need more people like you, I've always said, you always 'buy what you like'.

I do the same as you but if someone is sitting on the fence and asks for opinion, then that's what I will do.
Makes a change from the posts about which watch will depreciate the least or flip for the most profit.
Thanks for the replies (even the entertaining “handbags at dawn”) 😂
Yes, I’d not considered that after-event values. Hence going for a Tag rather than an Omega or Rolex (on my “investment” list)
The query was more so about the point of going for a “high ticket” price on a brand that might not be worth it.
For everyday, I’ve got a cheaper Citizen Eco-drive that does the job, but this next purchase is a “next step” up the ladder as it were.
And yes, if I like, I like and buy. I nearly bought a Senna a couple of years ago, but didn’t as I did my research and it wasn’t as limited as I was led to believe.
But in general, I’ll buy what I like as opposed to an investment. After all, it’s not that high a price

I tried to answer you question and kept on topic.
But for some reason, questions about Tag Heuer on this forum always leads to 'digital' punchups

Lol!! The input is most appreciated. Really
This forum has always been a bit strange with certain topics but I’ll admit I didn’t think a watch would start one!! Lol!
But there’s been a lot of good thought here that if not considered: from the lightly used option to the wear/tear on the bracelet.
Interesting topic : Thankyou all

I’m holding you slightly accountable for this:With regards to losing money I bought a tag 16 years ago for £1100 and just sold it when I got this new one and got £300 for it. So losing £800 over 16 years isn’t that bad. I’ve lost a lot more on cars, tv’s, phones etc.
