Sub-£20k fun family-friendly daily

All I can come up with is a Golf R Estate.

I previously had a B8.5 S4 Avant and it was lovely, but think these might be a little long in the tooth now. I’m expecting a Golf R to be a newer version of that really.

Have I missed anything obvious?

Family consists of a part time child and a small dog that generally occupies the middle seat.

I’ve had a 135 - it’s tight when loaded up for a trip but workable, still feels a bit small but for some reason a Golf R estate does not.

When considering the same question (and also wanting petrol, estate, paddle auto) my autotrader saved list was peppered with Mercedes CLA 250 AMG shooting brakes. Occasionally a full fat CLA AMG 45 will get close and BMW 340s also popped up. But apart from odd ball stuff (like the Megane Sport Tourer I ended up buying) it’s slim pickings. The Golf R is the answer, basically.

At your price point you have quite a few options you can gor for something slightly older but that has higher desirability & lower depreciation which offsets the slightly higher maintenance costs or you go for a newer car with higher depreciation due to their mainstream nature:

Leon Cupra 300 it's the same as the Golf but newer & will depreciate at a similar rate so I'd actually buy this instead.

I'm in a similar position, my son has moved out and no dogs, however I am 6"2 and broad shoulders, I occasionally need to transport my parents, 1 series is ridiculous, far too small.

Currently have a Tesla model 3, it's ok, but starting to annoy me.

Golf R estate seems to tick all the boxes, including the odd tip run. That or a Leon cupra variant.

My dad's car as a family car when I was a kid for about 10 years with a little sister was a mk1 Golf. If you really wanted to you could do it but people just choose not to.

In a classic case of budget (and requirement) creep, we’ve somehow ended up looking at M2s and M3s.

M2 is a lot of fun, but going to struggle on the family front 🙈

Get the C63 /M3 Competition

Or go for the M6 Gran Coupe
