Playing devils advocate if you make everything a hate crime it devalues the meaning of the term.

For example having a little chuckle at a goth who is in head to toe black heavy clothes including trench coat and thigh high boots when it's 35 degrees outside and if they overhear you and report you is that worthy of a conviction for a hate crime?

And why do goths get special treatment? Why not make it a hate crime to insult any group.

Playing devils advocate but maybe the issue is less the subject content and instead the rapidly diminishing “muh freedoms”. Maybe some might instead see this as further criminalising freedoms of speech and expression.
It’s interesting that you acknowledge such a removal of “freedoms” would be the result of all this, that’s how I read your post. Apologies if I have misrepresented you.
