Have run some valuations for a 2006 X type Jag SE V6 auto:

confused 1,300
autotrader 2,100
hj 2,300 - 4,000, expect to pay 3,000

What car won't quote for some reason.

Yeesh - any of these more accurate than others?? My gut says 2,000-,2,200 but confused is confusing me.... do not mind paying a fair price but of course don't want to overpay.

Or does anyone know another site I could use ?

The only accurate valuation is to look at what other cars are listed (and actually selling) at.

Yup,fair point but tough to find out what cars actually sold at - some reasonable ads out there but man, some ridiculous ones too.

We need a land registry for cars smile

I usually estimate that on a £3k car advertised it may sell for £2800 .

book prices are more unreliable as cars age.
For newish cars you can assume that they'll all be in similar condition. As cars get older the condition varies more and valuations become less reliable.

It all depends on condition but I would say confused is probably about right, old XTypes dont fetch high prices there prone to rotten outer and lower inner sills behind the plastic trim.

Ebay show only>sold/completed items is helpful IMHO.

I can see a petrol SE xtype being worth much more than a grand myself so i'd go with confused pricing

there are cases where all of the prices guides are so far out of kilter as to make them useless which does worry me when it comes to finding out what a car can be worth. I'd tend to agree that the only way to 'get it right' would be to look at the market-place and do your research

It's a pain on older cars. I had a 20 minute conversation insuring my last car as my valuation of it's worth at £200 seemed 'very low'. I only paid £250 for it so not quite sure who'se idea of value is more out, mine or the industry. What value is a 1997 Citroen ZX with not a straight panel on it? In the end the call centre person got their computer to accept £700 so that is what it was

I insured my new Xsara 2 weeks ago and put £1000 based on the only 2 that were not a Xsara Picasso on autotrader were up for a grand (which seems awfully high for an unloved unpopulat 20 year old slice of bland french cheese), even though I paid £150 for it...

It doesn't usually matter what you say about the value of a used car to an insurer, it doesn't matter, as long as its below a certain threshold (£25k with Direct Line I think), unless you're getting 'guaranteed value' for a classic car. They only pay out market value in the case of a total loss anyway.

Thanks for the offer - appreciated. I ended up not going for it as the VED duty is close to 600 quid a year and that is a tad too painful.
