Hi all,

I've had my 2019 A6 Avant for 3 months now, 5000 miles and thought I would share a huge amount of problems I've had with this piece of rubbish. This is my 3rd Audi and I've never felt the need to complain about anything previously, but this car is completely rubbish, unfit for purpose and Audi don't seem to care! I've listed all issues/ problems/ annoyances below!

1) Gearbox lag. Known issue- everyone complains about it- its so so bad. Fix seems to be to put the car in Dynamic mode- but why should I have to?!

2) Rattle under the dash- known issue. This will be going back to get sorted.

3) The stop start system. On the old manual model this works fine, however, the new model with the 'engine turns off when coasting feature' ends up turning the car off when approaching a junction, so when trying to pull out, the engine needs to kick in, then the bad, slow gearbox takes an age to respond. This has caused many close calls on roundabouts when trying to pull out quickly!

4) The lane departure feature- as do many others it seems! As had been written elsewhere, trying to overtake cyclists, avoid puddles potholes results in the car swerving back into the centre of the road and hitting whatever it was you were trying to avoid. This also fails in contraflows and gets confused with hatch markings on roads.

5) Rear camera clean button doesn’t clean the rear camera

6) The windscreen de-mist and blower system on maximum capacity takes an age to actually do anything. On the previous model, it had 12 settings, however, on the new model, this only had 6 settings with the maximum setting being nowhere near powerful enough

7) The windscreen wiper automatic sense just isn't as good as the last model. In the old A6, this would always be on the 'automatic' setting, but now, it just doesn't 'wipe' enough to clear the rain from the screen. The 'frequency' adjust button on the stalk also doesn't actually seem to do anything.

8) Anti collision feature often kicks in and tries to stop the car in perfectly safe conditions. Very dangerous

9) MMI- Why is the keyboard disabled when the car is moving?

10) MMI- Writing on the screen is rubbish, Type a ‘g’ or a ‘G’, or GG14 – its rubbish

11) When the phone is plugged in without car play, it disconnects whenever the phone is touched

12) Satnav routing is rubbish. It tries to take me off at every motorway slip road to miss nonexistent traffic

13) The zoom on the satnav wont stay zoomed in and defaults back to 2mi which is too far to actually see anything

14) Put the car in economy- Gear ‘E2/E3 etc’. Turn it off, get back in the car, now shows economy on the dash but D2/D3 etc’. Why? Doesn’t do this with dynamic or any other setting!

15) Lane departure being turned off. Stop the car- start again- lane departure remains off for the first few minutes then comes back on. Why?

16) Door handles stuck out and won’t go back into the places. Mainly drivers front/rear, but these are the most used so would expect all to do this

17) Drivers mirror seal bulged and stops mirror from folding out

18) Nav trying to look for a certain destination when the car already has a route in- this defaults to places nearby.

19) Why wont the car go into park and put the handbrake on when its been in reverse and the engine is turned off? It does this in forward so why not reverse

20) Doors don’t close properly- lack of ‘soft close’

21) Key battery failed after 3 months. Its also very difficult to get into the car with just the key.

22) MMI reverts back to ‘first use’ every time the car is started offering instructions for use etc when anything is clicked on for the first time

23) Oil level low again! Why is it using so much?

This is going back to Audi tomorrow to get some of this sorted. Its completely unacceptable on a >£40k car to have this many issues and bad design features! It seems like most of these are common issues across the forums too......

Again, please please please please dont buy one of these!!! Apart from the fact it looks quite nice, nothing else is good. literally nothing. I hate every second of being in it and cant wait to get rid of the piece of sh!t!

i think 9 is pretty obvious...

Are cars just waaaaay too complicated now with electronics controlling everything?

Good luck.

MyA4 2020 delivered in Dec 19 has a lot of the same issues particularly the MMI being pile of poo, bonnet wont shut correctly, speaker covers badly fitted, bad lag in auto D or S. The auto wipers are useless as well the ones in my partners Qashqai work better, I flipped mine in settings so I can have intermittent wipers not using the auto sense, auto lights also poor. To be frank the tech in the Qashqai has works a lot better than the Audi been surprised, not once in the Nissan has it crashed in the Audi it must of crashed 20 times now. Number 13 is very annoying mine does the same.

Mine is booked in to be looked at.

Hi all, thanks for the quick replies!

I understand what you mean about point 9- however, this being disabled means you have to use the screen to 'write' your destination which simply doesn't work. I cannot get the screen to accept a 'G' (I get a french 'C with cedilla') and a 'g' will ALWAYS give me a '9'.

Honestly, its absolutely rubbish and sounds like i'm not alone!!!

Some of your complaints are common to other VAG models.

I have an Arteon and the first thing I do after starting the engine is to disable the stop/start. It just doesn't seem to work in combination with an auto-box - as you said, it cuts out as you are coasting to a junction, or even while still moving in traffic (lose servo - brakes and steering). It has been checked over by the garage and they say it's functioning fine.

I've disabled the anti-lane change function via the menu system - it forces you to make much more aggressive steering adjustments.

The laggy gearbox response is something you get used to after a while. In the beginning I also used the sport mode, now I've given up and just let it do it's thing.

Despite my comments I love the car and I think it's probably helped me to change to a more relaxed driving style.

Can't comment on the other faults/oil usage

I’m fairly certain that you cannot turn off the stop/start function on the latest A6 model.

I understand that this is an EU regulation that is due to come in in a couple of year’s time. Audi thought it would be a good idea to bring it in ahead of time with the new A6.

It isn’t a good idea for the reasons given by the OP.

I read about A6 in Europe suffering from number of electrical issues and one not mentioned here: boot opening itself. There's another thread about A6 and similar comments about certain technologies.

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Lane departure warning has to be switched off every time. I had it in courtesy A1.

There's a few of those issues that are standard on all VAG cars.

The nav in wife's Tiguan is so annoying it put me off going for the cheap Passat Alltrack lease a few years ago. It's a DSG and it's horrible with stop/start (and autohold) but we always turn them both off (autohold stays off, stop/start needs to be done every time).
The auto-wipers never work at the right frequency - I've had other cars where they were perfect.

I’ve got most of the same issues with my A6. I’ve been told there is a software issue due at the end of Q1 that will solve a number of faults with the camera etc.

It’s the bloody creaks and rattles that get in my tits the most, the build quality is shocking. I’m close to getting rid of it and getting a BMW.

Update for you guys! Dropped my A6 off at 'An Audi Dealership' this morning (i'll tell you who when I get it back!)

I dropped the car off and went through the 23 points which I have posted on here with a 'master technician'- who, as I thought, put most of the 'issues' down to "poor design and bad testing" which I thought was interesting!!! Updated my OP below........

1) Gearbox lag. Known issue- everyone complains about it- its so so bad. Fix seems to be to put the car in Dynamic mode- but why should I have to?!
AUDI- YEAH, SORRY ABOUT THAT..... MAYBE TRY IT IN DYNAMIC MODE....

2) Rattle under the dash- known issue.
AUDI- WILL INVESTIGATE UNDER WARRANTY

3) The stop start system.
AUDI- TURN IT OFF WHEN YOU GET IN THE CAR.....

4) The lane departure feature-
AUDI- THE CAMERA DOESNT RECOGNISE CONTRAFLOWS- PROBABLY BEST TO TURN THIS OFF

5) Rear camera clean button doesn’t clean the rear camera
AUDI- WE'LL HAVE A LOOK AT THIS

6) The windscreen de-mist and blower system on maximum capacity takes an age to actually do anything. On the previous model, it had 12 settings, however, on the new model, this only had 6 settings with the maximum setting being nowhere near powerful enough
AUDI- YES, THE OLD WAS WAS BETTER...

AUDI- SORRY

8) Anti collision feature often kicks in and tries to stop the car in perfectly safe conditions. Very dangerous
AUDI- PROBABLY BEST TO JUST TURN THIS OFF WHEN YOU GET IN THE CAR.

9) MMI- Why is the keyboard disabled when the car is moving?

10) MMI- Writing on the screen is rubbish, Type a ‘g’ or a ‘G’, or GG14 – its rubbish
AUDI- YES, THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND NOTHING WE CAN DO

11) When the phone is plugged in without car play, it disconnects whenever the phone is touched

12) Satnav routing is rubbish. It tries to take me off at every motorway slip road to miss nonexistent traffic

13) The zoom on the satnav wont stay zoomed in and defaults back to 2mi which is too far to actually see anything

14) Put the car in economy- Gear ‘E2/E3 etc’. Turn it off, get back in the car, now shows economy on the dash but D2/D3 etc’. Why? Doesn’t do this with dynamic or any other setting!
AUDI- THIS IS A KNOWN BUG, BUT PLEASE BE ASSURED THE CAR IS STILL IN ECO MODE.

15) Lane departure being turned off. Stop the car- start again- lane departure remains off for the first few minutes then comes back on. Why?

16) Door handles stuck out and won’t go back into the places. Mainly drivers front/rear, but these are the most used so would expect all to do this
AUDI- KNOWN PROBLEM- WE'LL REPLACE ALL THE CABLES

17) Drivers mirror seal bulged and stops mirror from folding out
AUDI- WE'LL REPLACE THE MIRROR

18) Nav trying to look for a certain destination when the car already has a route in- this defaults to places nearby.

19) Why wont the car go into park and put the handbrake on when its been in reverse and the engine is turned off? It does this in forward so why not reverse
AUDI- WE'LL INVESTIGATE

20) Doors don’t close properly- lack of ‘soft close’
AUDI- WE KNOW, WE KNOW......

21) Key battery failed after 3 months. Its also very difficult to get into the car with just the key.

22) MMI reverts back to ‘first use’ every time the car is started offering instructions for use etc when anything is clicked on for the first time
AUDI- KNOWN BUG

23) Oil level low again! Why is it using so much?
AUDI- THIS ISNT A PROBLEM- DONT WORRY.

Got a courtesy Q2 which again doesn't scream 'luxury' but its better than the piece of scrap I took in. Just had a call from Audi Executive UK who didn't really care, told me 'everyone is entitled to their opinion', could offer no compensation/ could offer no answers really and said they don't monitor forums and doesnt really care if I continue to post my thoughts and experiences here!

Next step.... big banner, park outside Audi dealership and show people who are thinking of buying one exactly what they will be getting for their money! Anyone care to join???!

Don't do that - it'll put you into the BMW dealer network, otherwise known as 'Clueless wonders'

I'm sure I could come up with a list similar to the OP for my 5 series and am getting to the point where I want to get rid of my BMW and buy an Audi!

The gadgets are all great in theory but I'm reaching the conclusion it just means there's more to annoy you or go wrong.

I feel for the dealer, stuck with all these 'faults' that is down to poor design, over complicating cars.
Just imagine in 10 yrs time, half this stuff will be obsolete, not work, cannot get parts...yet the dealer will be getting it in the neck.

Another irritation with mine is that the near side mirror dips when you put it in reverse but goes back to a different position when you drive forward again, it always points too high and it needs lowering every time.

Oh, and the drivers seat occasionally slides back when you open the drivers door even though I’ve set it not to.

And the sat nav looses all your favourites and previous destinations.

For what the car cost it’s piss poor but to their credit on the occasions that it hasn’t started due to the software issues causing conflicts between the camera and the engine management computer Audi Assist have been out to me within an hour.

For example when a matrix headlamp unit fails!
