My 993 is leaking oil, it drips from just ahead of the driver's side rear wheelarch (RHD car). It appears to lose more oil when the engine gets hot.

Am I right in assuming that this is most likely to be a leak in the hoses that transfer the oil to the oil cooler? There is no oil being lost from the engine block itself, the underside of the engine is dry.

I know that I may have overfilled the engine with oil a while back (damn those unreliable oil level gauges, and yes I know I should only ever trust the dipstick, lesson learned... :( ) - could this have caused the problem?

Anyone know the severity of such a fault - I'm assuming a fairly easy fix if it's just hoses / clamps.

The rest of the engine is in good condition IMO, for a 75k engine there are no other leaks, or much smoke on startup (compared to the other 2 993s I've had).

Help would be much appreciated!!! :)

That's where the oil tank is, thermostat housing and cooler pipes amongst others. Probably a clip.

Not very helpful, but I doubt that over filling in this case would have caused the problem as the engine is dry sumped.
I had some seepage of oil from cam covers gaskets- probably due to the proximity of the Hot Hot turbos. Unfortunately I have to take the exhaust system and turbos off to change the cam cover gaskets. I intend to tackle this when I get the time.

Good luck on your search!

It does sound like it must be a cooler hoses because they do run down that side. It's unlikely to be the cam cover gaskets as the oil leaking from them falls down on the heat exchangers then into the undertray. I had both sides done when the engine was out to do the clutch because the puffs of smoke every time a drip was vaporised by the hot exhaust was smelly and unbecoming.

MR - it's not just the presence of the turbos, it's the change to hydraulic tappets so these covers don't get removed periodically to do the valve clearances as they were on 964s. The gaskets go hard stop accomodating the expansion/contraction cyles.

Thought I'd resurrect this old thread, as I've had the oil leak fixed.

I thought it'd be hoses, and a few hours labour, and had budgeted to suit.

Turns out that the oil filter had simply corroded through and oil was pissing out. The mechanic said this was fairly common on 993s.

As a result, no extra charge over the cost of the annual service I was having done anyway!!! So very pleased with myself.

Of course, I should have spotted something as simple as a leaking oil filter - so if your 993 is leaking oil on the drivers side, check the filter

Snap - my 993tt had a very slight leak that wasn't a problem from the cam cover gaskets. I did an oil change with 0W-40 Mobil 1 and she started leaking enough for it to be a problem. I had the gaskets done while other work was carried out, and since then stick to the 5W-40 instead. I have read on another proker forum of cars becoming leaky when using the thinner oil specs.

I've had 3 993s and *never* used the 0w stuff, I reckon it's too thin and higher mileage cars (like all of mine!) burn the stuff like nobody's business.

The current car has always been run on Mobil 1 15w/50 motorsport, which is a good deal more viscous and wouldn't have been the cause of the leaks.

And opieoilman reckoned it was OK whilst trying to sell me Silkolene Pro high-ester-content fully synthetic.

Interestingly, the indie I used have changed the oil to Magnatec, which everyone here says is utter shite. I'm taking the attitude that the oil's probably not that bad, but will simply degrade a good deal faster than a good synthetic. As such, I'll retain the Magnatec for a couple of thousand miles and then get it back on good old Mobil 1 15w/50
