Gearbox problem
Discussion
Hello. I’m new to this forum and new to any major car problems so I do apologise if some things I say aren’t correct. I’ve got a 15 plate VW polo. The car has been growling intermittently for the past 7/8 months or so, only when I’m doing under 2500rpm. Didn’t think anything major of it (Stupid i know) because I’ve had problems with the car since the beginning, misfire, start stop errors, epc and engine management light on you name it. Got a diagnostic when I had my service done few weeks ago and they said they couldn’t find anything. The guy took the car for a drive, said there was a knocking noise when letting foot off accelerator when changing gear, I admit I did notice that too but it only happened 3 times at the most which I thought i might of just been too heavy footed. Anyway to the point he said he suspected it was the gearbox bearings, he took my car off me, took the gearbox apart and said it was unserviceable and I’d have to have a new one put it which would set me back 4 grand. I’m no millionaire I told him that I can’t afford that so I said I needed the car back, I work 25 miles away, got bills to pay and because the car was driving fine it was intermittent it didn’t cause a major issue and I’d find a cheaper gearbox if i can from a reputable breaker which he refused to fit for me. He put the gearbox back together but when I tell you that I feel like my car is going to die on me now I’m not kidding. It’s clunking when going over the slightest bump, it popped out of gear today when I was doing 70MPH on the motorway baring in mind I got the car back 3 days ago and not had this issue for 7/8 months, the car was driving ‘fine’. I drove away from the garage and rang him to tell him this and he told me that it’s better than it was which is clearly not the case. Had a few of my friends that are more knowledgeable at cars than me to listen to the noise and drive it and they suspect he’s not fitted the gearbox back in properly. I am petrified to drive it, I’m £600 down for nothing and confused as hell as to what to do next. Sorry it’s long I’m really just looking for some advice. Thank you
Putting a knackered gearbox back in was a waste of money - you've spent half the cost of replacing the 'box for no benefit. You can be pretty certain it needs a new gearbox so your options now are pay somebody to replace it, do it yourself, sell the car with an obvious defect or drive it into the ground. It's pretty unlikely that any professional would agree to fit a used 'box so if you get anyone else to do it, you need to plan on fitting a reconditioned 'box - it's probably false economy to spend all that money on labour and fit a used 'box anyway.
Find a reputable garage, as clearly the previous guy was a con artist.
Like seriously...he stripped the entire gearbox to say it is unserviceable ? What a complete and utter croc of s
t.
I've little doubt he's lying through his teeth and probably wouldnt even have a clue how to take a gearbox apart.
And for such a common car, I'd image a used gearbox would be very easy to source...if it even actually needs a gearbox.

Yeah I went to see the gearbox specialist today and he told me that the transmission mount has been fitted incorrectly/wrong way round. He even questioned if theres anything even wrong with the gearbox in the first place as the cars only 5 years old. Going back to him when I get paid so he can have a proper look as I only had an hour spare today. He said £80 tops if anything has to be changed and would only need the car for a day

Nice that you've found somewhere that seems to be honest. Hopefully he'll get you the outcome any customer deserves. The first idiot is clearly just that. A con artist.

You're definitely right. Waste of space they are. Probably took advantage of the fact I'm young and don't really know that much about cars. The first idiot is clearly just that. A con artist.
I hope so. Thanks for all your help

Christ, I almost suggested that, but dismissed it as too simple/obvious a thing for the original mechanic to balls up.
Clearly not. Definitely did it on purpose. When I went to pick the car up he said he would happily buy it off me if I wanted that which was abit fishy cause the cars worth around 5/6k IF in good working condition and new gearbox is 4k?
