This ad popped up on one of my social media feeds and I thought it was an interesting concept.

https://helvetia.com.au/

I'm not the type to rent them and take photos for Instagram, but it interests me from the perspective of something very nice for a one-off event, or a kind of try before you buy or even an alternative way of collecting/flipping.

I haven't read all of the T&Cs, but can foresee potential issues with deposits, postage, theft, damage, bracelet sizing etc.

A$99 is about 50 quid and A$299 is about 150 at current exchange rates.

Looks like a newish company, so the range is quite limited, but will be interesting to see the pricing if/when the platinum collection comes along.

What do the WIS think?

The idea was on a Producer Micheal vid a little while ago, with a company in nyc.

I suppose if you want to really try before you buy it’s fair enough.

The only thing to consider you can get a decent second hand Speedmaster (and plenty of other things) for £1800...

You can rent almost every thing else from suits to cars for a wedding, so why not a watch.
Good luck to there venture.

Jesus. Can you imagine resizing all the bloody bracelets?

I’d be putting all the stock on leather straps or Milanese mesh bands!

Anyway, looks an interesting concept for the ‘rent/lease’ generation.

Silly idea - loads of hassle when a watch gets slightly scuffed when out on hire - was the scuff already there etc. Just think how many macro photo's you'd have to take before & after each hire to have half a chance of proving either way.

As for the firm themselves, they have a total of 26 watches, so assuming 1/3rd of them are really popular you could be waiting quite a while (to say the least) to get one you actually want to wear.

OK, I have a decent collection, but there is nothing in the Silver collection I'm bothered about & the only one in the Gold collection I really like is the Submariner.

To be fair, I think it's a reasonably new business and they are building up their inventory.

Maybe you could start a business with your collection Andy!

You reckon they only have one of each?
Oh wait. Sorry Andy, of course you don't have just one of each in your collection either.

It sounds like someone has decided to try and make money from his hobby. I suspect the gain will not outweigh the pain.

He'll either need to accept that the watches will come back scuffed and dented and that means the next renter's expectations need to be managed.

Or he'll need to charge for scuffs and dings. Which, as has already been pointed out will be a ball ache. He'll be chasing nearly every customer for extra payment, which won't be good for his reputation or blood pressure. Then he'll need to sell on the scuffed watch as it won't be rentable.
