E91 320D tyres - everyone says 225's??
Discussion
I am looking at getting some new tyres for my E91. Every website I go on and enter my reg number brings 17 & 18" wheels, suggesting 225 width tyres.
I currently have 205/55R16 on it, but some web sites suggest a 225 fitment to the current16" wheels.
Am I running the wrong size tyre on my car? Has anyone else changed to a wider size and does it improve the car at all or is it just fatter tyres for little change at more cost?

As already said, what does the sticker say on the door shut?I currently have 205/55R16 on it, but some web sites suggest a 225 fitment to the current16" wheels.

But yes, you can go a size wider with no issues, you’ll get a straighter sidewall, better rim protection etc...
ie. My alloys should be 235/40 and 265/35 18s... But I run 245/40 and 275/35 for those above reasons with no issues

Never thought of looking on the door pillar! But yes, you can go a size wider with no issues, you’ll get a straighter sidewall, better rim protection etc...

It says one selection of 205’s on 16” wheels but there’s quite a few selections of 225’s on 17” and 18” wheels. There is one option of 225’s on a 16” though.
I’m wondering if because it’s an SE it’s on thinner, taller tyres for comfort, rather than the sportier feel of an M Sport?

My 06 plate 325i came fitted with 205/50x16 winter tyres so that size ought to work OK on a 320d! But then it had Style 154 wheels which are only a 7J rim. It probably depends what style rims you have. When I bought a set of wheels for the rest of the year I got 17s that needed 225/45x17 tyres all round because they were 8J rims.
Bigger-engined models like my current 330i need 17s to clear the front brakes, but tyres are still 225/45x17 all round (it's an SE). I expect Sport models have staggered 18s with wider rear wheels and tyres than the front.
Then plate inside the door covers the whole range, rather than being specific to the car the plate is fitted to!

205/50-16 was the wrong size tyre - they should definitely be 205/55-16's. Sure they'll fit, but they'll have a smaller rolling circumference than the recommended tyres, so your speedometer will over-read.Bigger-engined models like my current 330i need 17s to clear the front brakes, but tyres are still 225/45x17 all round (it's an SE). The tyre sticker isn't that generic - it's for the car type it's stuck to, so (say) an E91. What the sticker doesn't specify is what wheels are actually fitted, which is more of a UK-ism. If you buy a car in Germany, the registration document will list permissible wheel and tyre sizes. The door sticker then tells you that if you have X tyre size fitted, the tyre pressure should be Y. So plenty of cross-reference. The UK registration document doesn't specify wheel/tyre sizes, so people end up trying to figure out what they need, often using the sticker as a reference.
Anything is possible when you order the car, i.e. an SE with M Sport wheels. It's always best to self-educate with the wheels you actually have & what tyre size you should have on there - not what it came with (if secondhand).
