What's Albuferia like?

I'm considering going to Albufeira. Is it mainly families and kids / the sort of place you go to in order to lie in the sun?

What is there to do there / what should I know?

Used to be ace. Went several times as a kid with Mum, Dad and Sister and it was perfect.

Now its gone a bit like the rest. I last visited in 2003 with wife. More touristy and attractive to more. Still leans more towards family orientation but the 'strip' towards the beach has become a tad 'Benidorm'.

The old town is good and probably your best bet for a nicer family type hol.

I agree, becoming too commercial now and has lost most of its former charm. We used to stay a couple of miles down the coast, and walk along the beach/ over the cliff tops to the town for the market.

yup, so tacky now it had that effect on me too.

Good park there called Zoomarine, you can swim with Dolphins. Great thing to do, thats if you have not already done it in the past.

But that was the only good thing about the area. I stayed about 1/2 hour away in Balia that was a nice part to stay.

Albuferia is Portugal's attempt of Benidorm/Spain. There are plenty nicer towns/resorts along the Algarve to stay. Quality of food (especially seafood) are wonderful once you are outside Albuferia. There are miles of unspoilt beaches along the west coast of Algarve, but be careful as the sea can be quite rough.
