Queston about mountain bike disc brakes

Hey, I got a Kona Shred. im removing front brakes, as I dont like the front brakes. Dont ask me why. I just prefer riding with rear brakes only.

I got disc brakes. I need to remove this disc but it has funny tranigle shaped bolt with allen key shaped hole but allen keys doesnt fit in too well.

Is there special tool to do the removeal of disc brake

It's a triangle shaped bolt. but an allen key will fit in it!!

my Hope discs are held on with standard allen key bolts

I'm not aware of a special tool, but I suppose it could be something manufacturer specific (to the disc manufacturer,not Kona.

Is it a torx screw -very like an allan screw, but star shaped, not hex. if so, you will get a set of torx bits (just like allen keys, but with star shaped ends) in halfords.

If it is deffinatly a hex head, sometimes, Hope in particular have used very shallow head allen screws to maximise clearance next to the fork, hence allen keys tend not to fit to well, and they round very very very easily.

It also provides 70+ percent of the stopping power...

mhhph I got them all out, using 8mm spanner. it is one of most weridest bolt i ever seen, it has triangle shaped, with torx/hex shaped. but 8mm spanner gripped the trainagle shaped. and here come out the disc....

those bolt just came off using 8mm spanner.

a) That's a torx screw; and

b) WTF are you doing!! Using the front brake is the most effective way of reducing your speed....although saying that mine squeels like hell at the moment...bloody XTR!

they are just normal torx bolts. They do lok odd cos of the outside shape but that is irrelevant cos you should use a torx bit anyway

tell me again why you dont use front brake ?

This must be a first. A Pher who hates their teeth. If you ever look at a Moto GP bike, they have puny little brake set ups on the rear and massive ones on the front. The reason? When you brake on either a motor bike or a bicycle there is a significant weight transfer to the front wheel. If you have no braking function with the front of the bike, you may find yourself rearranging your face in fairly short order. Good luck!

I ride my bike on dirt jump, bmx track. so front brakes arent really needed. it just extra dead weight. and I just upgraded from BMX to mountain bike.

Mind you, Im lazy bugger, I drive my car to riding spots hehe

So...

Even though these bolts are not designed to be gripped with a spanner, an 8mm spanner happens to fit them well enough to undo them, despite being compromised in its ability to apply torque by the bad fit.

Therefore, a normal 8mm hex head would have been perfectly adequate for applying an appropriate tightening torque to bolts in this duty.

But despite this, the designer has specified not normal 8mm hex head bolts (with washers if necessary), but spazzy headed bolts...

I suggest you track the designer down and shove the bolts up his arse.

I dont slam on brakes and skid long.... front brakes off, saved loads of weight. easier to throw about the bike in air

In other words, if you don't get up to the speed where you need to use a front brake, there is no use for it. My dirt jump/messing about BMX has no front brake as you just don't use it. My DH MTB has hydraulic 4 pots front and back.

Evidently you don’t like steep hills, stopping with just the rear break around here usually means a trip into the nearest tree.
