MSD Wiring

Just a quick question to the guys running a MSD 6AL.

Where did you connect the large red and black cables?

The build manual says Alternator or Starter motor for the red and any engine earth for the black.

But I'm sure I read somewhere not to wire the red to the alternator.

Your right MSD don't recomend going straight to the Alternator, but the starter motor should not be a problem. I had a battery disconnect switch and went striaght to that......

I ran them directly to the battery.

Mine is wired to the starter. No problems.

In the end it is all about voltage drop, and during cranking the voltage on the starter will drop (temperature dependent, cable characteristics etc). I too put mine on the starter but I think if I could do it again I would wire back to the battery/master switch. I have had the odd occasion when I can not start (probably due to not having a fully charged battery), my electronic dash drops out as well but that is not such an issue. I don't remember reading what the minimum voltage was for the MSD to operate at, if someone knows please post the value. One day I will measure the voltage on the starter when cranking under various conditions.

MSD instructions say 9-18 volts but will work down to 5 volts.
