I've been out of the UK for 11 years, driving hire cars when I need them. Now I'm looking at returning, but with no no claims bonus, insurance is expensive. So I'm thinking of buying something to park on my dad's drive for a year, with minimal insurance. Just so that when I get back I can sell it and get cheap(er) insurance.

I need you to pick holes in my plan! What sort of car should I get? I'm thinking either a banger (cheap to buy and insure) or something classic (cheap insurance and good resale).

TIA

Classic insurance does not accumulate NCD AFAIK and you'll need another car as a daily driver to get it anyway

Classic policies don't do NCD, but classic cars on normal policies do. You may find issues with your non-UK address if you are scrupulously honest though.

As said above you can't build NCD on a classic car policy but what you could do is take out a limited mileage policy and agree to limit your mileage to say 5k a year, possibly even less for greater discount, I think that's worth looking into

Will the cost of buying, keeping and insuring a banger be less than the difference between 0and 1year of bonus?

Buy cheap to insure knackered car for a small amount of money.

Break for parts and sell to make back purchase price, or possibly even profit, weigh in the shell, keep the V5C.

Insure car that now only exists on paper.

Have you done an insurance quote for the sort of car you would like when you come back to the UK? Stick it on a comparison site and then just change between 1 and 0 years no claims. It might not be that much of a difference.
If it's less than £500 difference I reckon it's probably not worth it

I accrued NCD for the past 8 years for my 993 via classic policies through ClassicLine and Admiral Classic Car Insurance.

I imagine the OP might get some difficulty having an address outside the UK and by not having the car garaged, which can often be a requirement on classic policies.
