There's some traffic lights near me with a 'No U-turn' sign on them, but how long does the restriction last.

Can I drive 10 yards past and then do a u-turn? Or maybe the next mile? Or perhaps never again?

There isn't an 'end of no U-Turns' sign so how do I know when it's ok again?

You'll have to read the TRO.

While driving down the relevant section of road?

A rapid if slightly cryptic response but no matter - google came to the rescue and I've learnt what a Traffic Regulation Order is.

My first thought is how bonkers a system it is when you need to research in advance the specific application of road signs in an area before you drive though it.

That aside, I looked up the TROs for the town this is in and sure enough I found one for this new road. The TRO has three sections: speed limits, buses and waiting but no mention of u turns. Does that make it unenforceable?

The fact you can't find it online doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Ring & ask (or email) the council concerned if you want to know.

Certainly the common sense approach would be that it applies to that junction, but not the road past the junction... Where I've seen them applied to a whole stretch of road it's had a plate below with "for 1 mile" or whatever on it.

The common sense would be some kind of 'end of no u-turn' sign down the road.

A lot of them will have a little distance sign below them so you are a bit unlucky in this case.

All the ones on traffic lights I've seen just apply for that set of lights, would have other signs further along the road if it was banned further.

I think i've seen them on dual carriageways, but no-where else.

OP, do you have a street view link to the junction in question?

But lets be honest, if you do a U-turn when there's a no U-turn sign, no other road user is impeded and no police are around to see it, did the U-turn even happen?

If the link works, here's one of them. Additional signs have been added the other way now too:

I would say it applies all the time that camera can see you. Looking at the picture.

To be fair, it looks fairly tight to swing a U-turn in one go at them lights anyway.

To answer the original question, my interpretation would be that it is perfectly fine to swing a U-turn at the end of the island and to cross the hatched markings. The no U-turn sign ends at the traffic lights, which you have long passed.

Another option is to do a right, cross the markings and take a left, to put you on the opposite track. Traffic dependent of course.

It really does depend on the TRO. A lot say "No person shall cause or permit a vehicle to turn at any point in the road so as to face the opposite direction to that in which it was proceeding"
So the test with that wording is: do you go one way along the road passing the restriction, then, turn in the SAME road, to face the other way.

Of course one might argue that if lots of people want to do u turns, there is something wrong with the road layout anyway.

Surely a no u turn sign on a traffic light controlled junction means no u turns within the junction. It's normally to stop people doing a 180 back on themselves as they will be doing it whilst the traffic is flowing towards them also on a green light.
