Loss of power/dead over 3,500rpm.
Discussion
Guys,
Had a bit of a problem with my Chim this evening after a day of great driving out around Essex. Having run fine all day on the way back home the car started to feel like it was losing power about 15 mins after setting off, this was while cruising along at 50ish and about 2,500rpm. It had warmed up, was about 2/3 full of fuel and otherwise all seemed normal. Slowing down to come into a village it felt like it was misfiring majorly and stuttering a fair bit, not good and i was preparing for it to cut out on me.
I kept on going and it kept running but feeling v.lumpy, refusing to rev anything above 3,000rpm. I pulled over and the idle was fine and i could accelerate away but it felt like running into a brick wall and it all started missing etc when it got to about 3,000rpm and was feeling none too even up till then. This continued for a bit till pulling away from a roundabout i got a couple of major jolts a small pop and things seemed to clear out a bit and return almost to normal.
Following this the car seemed ok so i headed down the M11, round the M25 and onto the A2 and although it was not feeling entirely right it made it ok. Thing is the acceleration is still not what it should be, it seems to be completely dead over about 3,500rpm now although will rev through if you really push it.
I have noticed a couple of times over the last few weeks that the car has been flat over 3,500 but it has never been anywhere near as bad as this evening.
I prob haven't described this all that well but if anyone has any ideas what is likely to be wrong it would be appreciated.
Cheers
Al

It does seem still to be firing on all cylinders, just badly. It'll rev as normal up to almost dead on 3,500rpm then be completely lethargic going beyond that.
When it was playing majorly silly beggars last night it seemed to be idling fine but not firing on all cylinders when it was revved.
Where does the coil come from if i needed to buy a new one, is it a standard land rover etc part that i could likely get from Halfrauds if need be?
Cheers

The coil is indeed pretty standard and any motor factors should be able to sort you out (if you give them the part no) It may well be the leads breaking down though rather than the coil.. or indeed something else entirely. Sadly its very hard to give a proper diagnosis without seeing the car.

Doesnt sound good,
Could be a number of things, thottle pot , Faulty injectors!!Ht lead braking down!!

RRRRRRR come on thats a cheap shot
everyone should now my typing is pony and trap by now
By the way is the coil leaking at all, also if you take it off and give it a gentle shake and see if the internals rattle as another tester that its shot.

See if you can borrow a coil to see if that is your problem. Only takes a minute to swop. I have a spare but am probably too far away.
If you do need to buy one, get a Bosch one - costs slightly more than the lucas original but lasts longer. ACT products sell them, or if you have a local motor factor it is a Land Rover part number PRC6574, Bosch part number 0 221 122 392.
Good luck.

Thanks guys, i went the technical numpty route and packed the poor thing off on the back of a truck to someone who knows what they are doing as opposed to my most technical intervention into proceedings being remembering to put fuel and oil in it and the relevant ends for each...
Sounds likely that it is coil/ECU/HT lead related going by what you guys have said and the very knowledgable Griff owning RAC blokey said too.

Cheers for the help guys, after being at the garage for a week they have sorted the problem..
It turns out it was a collapsed air intake pipe apparently that was restricting the flow of air into the engine so now it has been straightened out and refitted it is back to normal. I'm not entirely sure why this would cause the symptoms to come and go so drastically but i will keep an eye on it for the next while and see how it goes.

Hi guys,
I'm really curious over this, if the std airflow pipe was in place, how the hell did the wire supports in the pipe collapse.
Not heard this one before, still at least your sorted.
It's double skinned quiet often the inner skin will 'ballon' under load (air flow) and form a nice restriction that is not easy to see when the engine is not running. Best advice would be to check it with a tourch and any nicks tears or signs of internal old age replace it.
Personnally I replaced mine with a smooth bore silicon one as it helps the overall air flow over and above the ribbed standard one IMHO.
