According to official figures there are only a few tens of thousands of cases outside of China. There are billions of people outside of China. What are the odds that with so few cases I would have heard of any of the victims yet every day there are more and more people I know eg Tom Hanks, UK health minister, Premier League football player, wife of the Canadian PM.

Something doesn’t seem to add up here.

Actual cases are probably a multiple of 10 to those recorded.

Which just shows it's not a dangerous as some people believe.

I would say your assumption is correct.

But there is no conspiracy. You can only report cases if they test positive. If people show no or limited symptoms you won't test..

I doubt it. In heavily effected countries there is mass testing going on. In Italy they have tested about a quarter of a million people and epidemiologists are working on contagion models. Are their cases we don’t know about? Yes. Does this mean that we can assume that all of the information is wrong and you have come up with something scientists working on this have not? No.

You’re right OP, but bear in mind these people have big social/public contact and would likely have been through many airports etc. IMO it’s definitely more than reported, it can’t be less, but it’s a case of how much?

My concern at the moment is lack of confidence in the UK preparation, a part of which is minimal testing/lack of advice/no Gov info films on TV etc. It’s a bit like they try something and sort of give up when it gets too big. My point is I think we’re at a stage where numbers infected will be poorly logged and a bit random and only hospitalised cases will be given.
I only hope they don’t give up releasing the hospital stats or we’ll know we’re really up the swanny.

Agreed. It's not a cover up or conspiracy though, it's simply that we're not testing everyone nor do we plan to.

If you display symptoms but haven't just returned from a hot spot then you are just to isolate. People on here have experienced exactly that.

Hillary Jones (the TV doctor) has just said on GMB that it's likely to be in the 10's of thousands or possibly 100,000 at the current time.

I would add I hope it’s HUGELY underreported for the obvious effect it would have on the death/recovered rates which, to put it bluntly, are apocalyptic in Europe at the moment.

I think OP has good question, I know one person tested positive (so will be recorded) and four with it who are isolating and won’t ever be recorded unless they need intervention.

The chief science advisor said yesterday at the press conference that the actual number was far higher which makes sense.

My wife and I are both self isolating, I have been a week now and her 3 days , we have mild symptoms ( cough, mild fever, tired and aching) and travelled back from the US a little over a week ago.

We dont think we have it but we have enough symptoms to be sensible, I hope there are many people like us . Obviously not bothering the health service at this point.

anybody with a funtional immune system will get coronavirus and only display a runny nose, therefore instead of seking medical help they will just blow their nose.

Consequently, none of those cases will be reported, leading to the underreporting metioned it the thread title.

yes It is probably more prevalent and less fatal than the numbers suggest. It also isn't killing kids. Not sure why all the hysteria.
