I have seen many threads talking about EFI, and a few about emissions. I am based in Hong Kong where new vehicles are required to meet EU, USA or Japanese noise and emissions standards.

I am trying to get my hands on a full set of the regulations, the general principle is that the vehicle must meet current standards in EU, US or JP.

I can avoid emissions compliance (and first registration tax of possibly US$50K!!) here by using a Trade Plate on the car.... but would prefer to be at least emissions compliant as it is an offence to drive a car on trade plates that is not compliant. I can get away from the taxman, but not the greenies.

Noise should be an easy one at least temporarily!!.. the obvious killer is emissions......but I understand that it has been done before in US and Germany.

Does anyone know of any reputable engine builders that can supply an emission compliant engine + exhaust + wiring harness package?

Speak to the factory they are very helpful, Amerspeed.com is their engine supplier, the 18 degree head exhaust system is repackable - ie loud or very loud and could be fitted with a catalyst converter inside the rear exhaust box

Gman,

Thanks, I have already sent an email to AS earlier today, hopefully they can help.

However, from what I can gather from the many threads I have seen re: EFI LS engines....you are pretty much on your own WRT to emissions and wiring.

...... I am surprised that someone hasnt taken the bull by the horns and come out with an emissions compliant engine + exhaust + wiring package for the US Ultima market.

If there is someone out there I would love to know.

Had a reply from AS.... they say they can build a 350ci 350hp with Ramjet that will pass emissions... but have not done one before.

Have contacted Sven and he's passed emissions in Germany with an LS6.

Is there anyone out there that has also passed German or US emissions... what engine did you use?

I don't know about Hong Kong, but you should make sure you understand the rules.

US emissions are really tricky, because it isn't just measurements for pass/fail.

In CA for example if you have a post 74 engine block you have to use every piece of emissions related equipment from the original engine block. And you be surprised what counts as emission equipment.

If it's just passing modern measured emissions then you should be able to do it realtively easilly as long as your satisfied with reasonable power. I'd look at a transplant from a late model corvette or camaro.

See this thread - www.viperalley.com/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/515579/page/1/view/collapsed/sb/5/o/all/fpart/1 . From the pics looks like he has CATS and secondary O2 sensors, possibly making it smog legal?
I'll be installing an LSx also, but smog rules for "kit cars" here in Ontario are vague, and not enforced in the boonies where I am.

I passed emissions in spain by leaning off the carb 50 meters before the test centre, then changing it back again straight after, that got me to half the legal limit using a standard 540bhp ultima engine.

That seems reasonable to me for such a complex bespoke exhaust kit with two very expensive cats. The factory S/S system costs £1761 which is $2300 without shipping or ceramic coating. They make dozens upon dozens of the things. Heck, I just bought a decent SLP exhaust system for my bro's Camaro and that's costing over $1500.

If a bunch of builders got together I'm sure they would lower the price for a group buy.

DRJ,
I have to have on board diagnostics fitted in order to meet emissions.....

Dave,

Funny you should say that, I had been thinking the same thing (group buy).

I have also been talking to Jeff Schwartz about building me an emissions compliant engine. He is pricing up a new LS2 including exhaust, and a day on the dyno to make sure the wiring + computer work properly.

The exhaust on his car runs under the axles, it doesnt run cats but could do and looks quite neat.

I have a photo from another guy (michael ruettger) who runs a BMW V8 with headers running under the axles with cats and a ferrari 348 muffler, it looks quite neat.

Both of those systems look much better than the one at viper alley and the one i posted above.

Also, on the Ultima USA brochures there is a blue car with an LS1 that looks like it is running standard factory corvette headers (another option Jeff had mentioned) ... does anyone know that car?

I believe it is the former US importer's demo car. This is the operation that got CARB certified with the Corvette engine system.
When I saw this car, I did not notice the engine mounts, but suspect it has the altered chassis mounts for directly installing a LSx engine - same as Jeff S. The standard SBC mounts may be in the way for down-path exhaust on a LSx engine - I'll be finding out when my engine is in place.

Al,

Jeff said he thought the SB chassis would be a problem, I asked Ted and he said there were mounts available to mount an LS engine in an SB chassis.... I think we were having two different conversations.

I am flying over to the factory later this week for a look, and to place an order, Jeff said try to order a chassis the same as his, but I dont know if the factory still do this. Logically they should, cos the LS engines are definitely going to be a popular choice in the US as the LS2 and LS7 aftermarket grows....

Worst case I will modify my chassis....

What do you see as the steps to the mod? Is it anything more than chopping off the SBC mounts and welding LSx mounts to the chassis? Provided the trans alignment, bell length, and block length are known, I would think a local fabricator could accomplish this in a matter of hours, no?

street and performance sells sbc to ls1 mounting plates. I used them on my car. I also ran into some issues with the gear linkage, ended up another piece to go around the oil pan.

I did originally but as you can guess it didn't fit and I had to put a camero pan on.

are the new Amer. Speed 700 and 720bhp SBCs emissions compliant? Are they pre1974 blocks? Will they pass SVA?
