You can get a fair bit of Avensis for that kind of budget, fits all your criteria.

Just as an example (there are diesels to choose from as well).

If the only thing you didn’t like about the Octavia was how unrefined the diesel was, a petrol Octavia or equivalent from the VAG stable seems like a good bet. 12k miles a year isn’t all that much in the grand scheme of things, and petrols don’t lag too far behind as far as efficiency is concerned.

Your Skoda would have had the lowest amount of noise suppression out of all the VAG cars in this segment so I'd still be going with a diesel but some slightly better ones.

Mondeo Titanium X Sport these are a better steer & imo a more refined car than the Octavia

Citroen DS5 a smart comfortable spacious place to be

508 SW GT having an Auto makes these a bit more relaxing & the extra 40bhp over the above makes it's presence felt too.

508 Allure being a saloon it'll have a better NVH compared to the hatches/estates above.

Skoda Superb Elegance this will have a better NVH than your VRS.

I will say that if you want a properly refined & quick car that has sensible running costs then I'd be looking at these three:

XF Premium Luxury
