Nissan Note. Avoid the newer model (about 2013 onwards). Best choice of engine is either the 1.4 petrol or 1.6 petrol. Both engines are chain-driven and very reliable. The latter is available as an auto. There's loads about and £3k will get you a good one with loads of spec. Very easy to get in and out of.

There are lots but when you narrow it down to the OP's requirements the pool drys up considerably.

Thank you all, the jazz and Kia soul weren't on the radar but both would fit the bill perfectly.

Will look at those in more detail.

Seems the <50k requirement is a real challenge and I'd tried to explain that modern cars can handle alot more but he's refusing to budge.

A Citroen c3 and a fabia 1.2 tsi are on the list too with the later my favourite of the 2 but the Kia and jazz will likely be top 2 now

The note was on the list until my nephew refered to it as a nissan scrote (apparently it means scruffy person) and has promised to refer it I like that forever if purchased...

Suzuki Splash sounds ideal, you'll get one in budget for your requirements and the 1.2 petrol is very peppy.

Others options worth checking out:
5 door Clio
Kia Rio
Nissan Micra
Mitsubishi Lancer
Citroen C3 Picasso might just be in budget

Personally though what I'd do is just put max budget £3.5k, max mileage 60k and newer than 2010 into Auto Trader within a 40 mile radius and see what comes up. From there, go and look at a few different options and see what he likes best.

I have a Suzuki Splash SZ3 as my daily runaround, albeit a diesel. Very well made cars in my opinion.

If you're looking at a Suzuki Splash, it's worth bearing in mind that the second generation Vauxhall Agila is pretty much the same car.
