Hello!

I've just bought 'scottsters' Guards Red C4 so thought I'd say hello to the porsche forum.

The car has given me no surprises thus far (apart from the standard new owner - 'sh*t look at the oil guage' before realising that this is a common predicament for new 911 owners to be in.. ;)

My impressions thus far are very positive - feels like it has been hewn from granite (mind you my previous 'toy' car was a TVR S2 so I was starting from a fairly low base)

I'm surprised that despite running on lowered springs that the car is pretty comfortable on the less than perfect roads round my way.

Mechanically the car has had a recent top end overhaul and has a huge history file - I totted up the bills last night and there was almost £20 excluding the german invoices from the first few years of its life...

The only area that lets the car down is the paint - the guards red has faded to 'guards pink' on the bonnet & wings and there is a small rust bubble just to the lower left side of the rear screen.

Thanks to all on the forum who have aided my search :)

anyhow... enough of my words, here is couple of pics:

Congratulations!

£20 in bills eh? Cheap car...

No, seriously, glad you're enjoying it. Just rememeber, a 911 is for life, not just for xmas. They don't like being left alone for long periods, so get out there and drive it regularly!

That rust will get worse - if the car were mine I'd get someone to remove the screen and treat it properly (especially if I thought was going to have too have the car painted) - Porsche even offer a repair panel for this area - and as it's identical to all 911s pre the 993, it should fit the 964...if the rot is that bad. It's one place where a lot of the 964s I have seen have rotted - a lot have been filled and blown over....that lasts about 5 minutes!

You may be able to get the paint sorted - either get a professional to try or have a go yourself - clay bars aren't expensive and Raceglaze offer the kit to do the job. You'll be surprised what you may achieve, but red is notoriously soft...I wouldn't personally be tempted with lots of T Cut - someone may already have tried that and the paint may be very thin....the clay just removes oxidised paint - far less abrasive than T Cut.

Hi Bergs2, i'll be following your post with interest as i too am about to swap my TVR S2 for a porker. Havent made my mind up whether to go for a late 3.2 Carrera or a 964. I prefer the look of the older model but like some of the finesse of the newer one.
I need to drive both and make my mind up really. I keep reading negative reports about the 964 though with expensive servicing, oil leaks etc ?
Good luck with your new chariot !

Hey Tim,

Glad you enjoyed your first 24 hours of motoring!

Please do me one favour and stop putting pics up here and saying how good it is - I was upset enough yesterday watching you drive off (and miss your first gear change ) but this is worse! Only joking, let us know how it goes.

ps: I saw the pics above and thought 'wow, this guy has a similar garden to me.... Doh!'

Sorry Dave - I'll try to keep my 'positive' posts to a minimum

Missed the first gear change as I was reaching for the gearstick with my left hand... did that a few times on the way back... doh!

Now, a negative - why doesn't anyone ever let me out at junctions anymore?

Seriously though, thanks for the full rundown on the car, and good luck with all your bits & bobs

You jammie git you paid 11.5k for a car which had a top end. Nice!!!

Don't worry too much about the paint. The car looks really nice, sitting low.

Cheers

thanks for the link Bergs, always good to hear from owners as it gives you the 'low-down'. I've seen most of the points for & against but still none the wiser really. I guess it will boil down to driving both models and getting a specialist to inspect/hunt one down for me..never done that before, always trusting my own judgement for better or worse, but dont want to buy a Porker that will cost me several K in repairs.
Anyone on here bought from 911 virgin? They seem to get some regular nice cars in, though a little dearer than elsewhere.

Always mixed feelings about 911 Virgin - I actually quite like Henry from the couple of occasions that I've met him but keep a very open mind about what he says and what he's trying to charge for his cars.

You'll see from the thread that BERGS gave you that I would advocate the 3.2 - I really don't think that the 964's additional refinements count for much although it is a bit quicker. However there does seem to be a strong 964 contingent on here who'll argue that the low cost of a 964 counts in its favour. All I can say is that I drive a really nice 3.2 on a daily basis and it is a pleasure to drive and gives me no trouble at all. For the rest of my opinion see the other thread.

Henry from 911 virgin is on this forum a bit, so may say hello

All you can do re:964 and 3.2 is drive them both, pref back to back, and then see what you can get for your budget. IMO, the 964 is more modern in driving feel than the 3.2, and the 993 surpasses the 964 on those terms by a similar margin.

I know of an extremely nice SC that has just come up for sale if anyone wants anything even more 'classic' - just had 16k spent on it, and it will be up for much less than that.
