Smoke & burning smell coming from air vents

Hello everyone.
My fiance and I were travelling back from meeting a few people from the Herts/Beds region yesterday when all of a sudden at 30 mph smoke started billowing out of the air vents along with a burning smell - the heater blower was on at the time. Needless to say we quickly evacuated the car not knowing the cause. After a few minutes and realising that it was not the engine, we started up again and drove off none the wiser. :confused:
Following a search on the forum and a read of the bible, I have come to the conclusion that something has possibly got jammed in the heater blower motor? Maybe on the passenger side as I don't think I have the cold blower on the drivers side. Another point - the heater blower still seems to work although it makes a large humming noise when turned on and the smell is still there. Not sure if the humming noise is normal or not, I've never noticed it previously.
Anyone had this before? Is there anything I can check or is it a case of getting professional help?

Yes got back ok but not without a trauma.
After evacuating the car at lightning speed, the bloke who was in the car behind gets out to help push the Griff off the road and says "i was just thinking nice car". Then one of the locals comes out of their house to help push too and he says "and i was thinking about buying a TVR" with a wry grin on his face!
Turns out that it there is nothing wrong mechanically which is a relief. Still haven't had the chance to look at the heater blower motor yet though, hoped it's not burnt out as it still seems to work.

its a real pig to get to, i doubt though its burnt out as it would not work. I guess it might of got a leaf or something stuck and it over heated, does sound very strange. There is a four pin connector that is easy to get to, not that it will help unless it is burnt out and you can use the second winding in the motor but its not quite as fast.

Just an update as I've had a chance to look further into last weekends incident.
The heater blower seems to work fine, but the main tell tale is that there is now no heat when the heater knob is turned to hot. Whether fully clockwise or anti-clockwise, the air coming through the vents stays the same (i.e.) cool or luke warm, never hot as before the incident. I've read through the whole section of the bible on cooling esp the part on 'cold heater'. The hot/cold valve in the passenger footwell works, the coolant is topped up and the thermostat seems to be opening ok after testing the inlet pipe into the radiator.
I can't help but think that something has blown in the heating system behind the dash/glovebox considering the amount of smoke and the burning smell that shot through the vents, and is linked to the fact that there is now no heat
Any help or advice as to what may have blown and how to get to it would be much appreciated.

could be the motor for the heater valve.
in the passenger footwell, at the end of the infeed pipe is a valve controlled by a servomotor. does this turn when you select hot/cold. could also be the potentiometer in the dash that controls it. ie the hot cold knob.
if the smell was bad, you can probably still smell the offending article. dash control or motor
