Does anyone here have experience with car paint who could offer some advice?

Last weekend, while washing my wife’s Golf R, I noticed this damage. I took it to our local dealer, who photographed it and sent the images to VW. They’ve now come back and said it’s stone chips, so it’s not covered under warranty.

In over 20 years of driving, I’ve never seen damage like this. I washed the car the weekend before, and it was absolutely fine. There are no actual dents, and my feeling is that it’s simply poor paintwork from VW.

I’m planning to speak to them tomorrow, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Looks to me like it's gotten too close to a fence post?

Reminds me of that episode of Top Gear where they sand blasted the paint off the sills/arches of a 458 and McLaren ragging them along a dusty runway.

It’s just over a year old. Not crashed . If you look at the second photo it looks like it’s flaking a bit.

That's not crap paint, that's been scraped against something whilst reversing.
Paint, no matter what make of car doesn't just flake off like that, it's why VW have refused it under warranty.

A few years back I was looking at Audi S4 Avants approx 2010-2011 model years when they were 2-3 years old and most A4/S4's and other Vag models were getting new wings fitted for exactly this but it was quietly so not sure if recalled.
I believe golfs from previous generation had similar issues hence why there are a few years where the front arches rusted like crazy.
