Anyone here starting a new job?
Discussion
Pretty risky time I suppose to start a new job.
I've literally just been sent contract and offer letter yesterday.
Contract is draft as it doesn't have a starting date yet.
I've just handed in my notice today and hopefully will confirm a finishing date with my current employer soon.
Emailed some questions over to HR manager of new job yesterday but no reply as yet. Perhaps she is busy but just feeling a bit anxious.
Few comments from directors at current job asking if I'm really sure I want to make this move in this climate.
Anyone in the same boat?

I'm meant to be starting a new job in 2 weeks with all contracts signed etc. Have been on gardening leave for the last 2 1/2 months. Phoned this morning to 'check in' following the current situation and it is looking like the start date will be postponed but no final decision yet. I am worried but what can you do?!

Very similar situation here, have been sitting on the offer for a while, new firm says everything is fine and will continue to be fine. Role is at a smaller firm, but with a good chunk more money and other benefits. I think I want to see some action from the chancellor to support businesses and at least some signs that the pandemic is getting under control first.
Worrying times.
The whole process of getting this new role took 2 months so unfortunately the timing is not too ideal. If not for the coronavirus this would be an excellent opportunity for progression.
I’ll probably wait another day and perhaps give the HR manager a call.
I’ve got the contract and offer but no date has been confirmed yet. It’s also not signed yet.
Last time we communicated everyone looked very positive. I’ve even asked about impact of coronavirus in my final interview just last week and was assured by director they have plans set aside and will not affect this role.

I should’ve sat longer on the offer but the recruiter was very pushy for verbal acceptance. JamesD74 said:

Indeed. Understand what you are going through mate. Hope things work out for both of us. Edited by JamesD74 on Tuesday 17th March 15:59
I'm the same boat. Handed in my notice 2 weeks ago. Finish in 3 weeks.
My boss said today are you sure you want to leave. Worked at current company for 6 years, secure role. New job is in a different industry and a new role for me. Reason for leaving current role was lack of opportunity and the fact I hadn't learned anything in years.
New role is £6k more and an advancement in terms of career but slightly less stable i believe. s
tting it to be honest. Was going to call HR for the new role to see what's going on although I know they have called my references recently which is positive I guess.
What would people do in my situation? Stay in comfort or take the risk?

You resigned from one job with only a contract with no starting date and also remains unsigned?
I can't give them an exact starting date until I hand in the resignation letter and has the agreement of current company.I was told not to sign the contract I've got as it hasn't got a date yet. Literally got the job last Friday and contract sent over late Monday.

Very similar to me! My new tole is also about 6k more and it's with a global company that has more progression chances. My boss said today are you sure you want to leave. I took a chance with the new role as this is quite a rare opportunity.
Spoke to the recruiter yesterday about my concern and he mentioned that HR manager could be busy as they were interviewing another (different) role yesterday. I suppose this is positive news.

Big risk of cause but think you will regret it if you pass up on this opportunity providing you hear the right noises from HR. That's where I'm at currently. Took me lots of interviews elsewhere before getting this and think I'd regret it massively if I don't take it despite the panic. My wife and father in law who works in employment law are both telling me I should continue to go for it. Essentially this could all blow over in a month who knows (it might not of course). In China they are back at work now and things are looking up. For me if I stay where I am its another year I get older without career progression or without a payrise.
Hi,
I work in property consultancy and I am due to begin a new role after Easter however I have now been informed my start date has been postponed to late May at the earliest.
My current employer HR says cannot extend the notice period or allow me to withdraw my notice as they have formally accepted this (and I have the paperwork supporting their acceptance). They also cite that because I have accepted a position elsewhere and signed that contract, I cannot retract.
I am trying to plan contingencies should my new employer move my start date again as their workflow has slowed enormously as a consequence of client base stopping from the virus. The work is there, they can't do it at the moment. If I were to seek and accept an alternative role at another company during the interim between end of my current notice and the start date of the new company, is this legal?
