patella alta

my lad has been suffering with grumbling knee pain for about a year - he is an otherwise healthy 15 year old and likes his sport. He took up running last year, which seemed to pre-curse this condition.
He has done some work with a decent sport physio, and has religiously done rehab. As it wasn't settling down GP has done x rays, indicating patella altus - the symptoms I have read about on line fit well with his complaints.

waiting to see ortho consultant, but anyone had this, and what worked for you?

Patella alta is a high riding kneecap. Usually congenital so likely born with it. Usually an incidental finding and doesn’t cause symptoms. Can cause Patellofemoral syndrome which is likely exacerbated with his running. Not sure what treatment options are for him.

Difficult and often no surgical options. You sound like you've done all the reasonable things, so you have nothing to lose by asking to see a Soft Tissue Knee Surgeon next

You list your location as North East, so I'd go for these colleagues/friends, depending on where you are.

He may have Osgood-Schlatter disease. It is a fairly common cause of knee pain in a teenager and can co-exist with patella alta. Tenderness at the tibial tubercle ( the bump at the front of the upper part of the shin bone) is a sign.

Cheers The-Doc, I have him booked in with Prof Deehan next week at the jesmond Nuff - hopefully we can see what options we might have - He is really fed up with not being able to run without pain.
