A visit to the Dentist..
Discussion
My wife works for a dentist, they have run out of masks and dont know when they are getting more. They are having to use visors but they dont do the job as well as a mask.
She has gone in today expecting to be dealing with lots of cancellations.
If you are in a vulnerable category, I would avoid the dentist, but non vulnerable, I would still go.

NHS England has been very negligent in giving proper advice to dentists. We are all furious.
We are supposed to carry on as normal apart from asking health questions.
The virus can transmit from asymptomatic patients.
Dentists generate highly contagious aerosol spray during most treatments.
No suitable PPE is available to protect patients and staff from this.
NHS Wales and Scotland have now said that dentists should provide emergency treatment only.
Silence from NHS England.
We are supposed to carry on as normal apart from asking health questions.

Interesting. My wife's practice have been advised to set up a quarantine room, to ask q's about coughs and fever and turn away anyone who has either, or quarantine them if they are too ill to travel or are travelling by public transport. We are supposed to carry on as normal apart from asking health questions.

Unless masks are FFP3, they are useless.
Just a visor?
Normal transmission of Corona virus by droplet route results in infection starting in upper respiratory tract.
Transmission through inhaling aerosols results in virus being inhaled deep into the lungs.

I went this morning for a check up
No issues, nothing from the dentist to suggest they would cancel beforehand.
Just a standard notice that if you have symptoms or are self-isolating then don't go in.
If I was in the vulnerable category then I probably wouldn't have gone, but then I probably wouldn't be anywhere public (unless it was essential) if I was in that category.

That advice is from March 6th and way out of date for current situation. I'll put up current Scottish and wales advice if you like?
That would be interesting thanks. This is the first day she has been in this week, so the new stuff will probably be with her. They are getting pretty stressed about masks!

NHS Scotland and NHS Wales have recognised the risk of carrying out aerosol generating procedures and have advised not to do any on ANY patient except for unavoidable emergency treatment. This is what I am following from now on.
There is a code for getting normal masks from usual suppliers, but they aren't effective at stopping Corona virus. We are finding it impossible to get FFP3 masks.

The Receptionists were on the Phone cancelling appointments for Fillings and I was worried they wouldn't be able to help me.
Drilled and a Temporary Filling put in. I am so grateful. I don't know what I would have done.
Told not to book a follow up Appointment yet.
My Dentist also mentioned lack of Guidance for England.
Latest guidance for dental practice issued by the NHS for England, eventually.....
https://www.england.nhs.uk/coronavirus/wp-content/...
It's from the Dept of Health, so it applies to private dentists as well. Basically it limits treatment to those which don't require drilling or cleaning with a water cooled drill, unless for the relief of pain/swelling/trauma ie emergency treatment only.
Routine fillings, crowns, bridges, veneers, root fillings etc not being done now. Checkups, simple extractions, dentures, temporary fillings are OK. Over 70s, vulnerable patients etc shouldn't attend unless urgent treatment required. We can't even polish teeth now due to 'splatter' and aerosol production as it carries a risk of infected droplets being inhaled by the dentist, nurse or hygienist.
Instead of my patients' teeth being full of holes and gaps, now my appointment book is, with many patients cancelled for the foreseeable future
