Suggestions for a comfortable but engaging A road commuter.

Am about to start a new job which sees my commute go from 4 miles each way to 40. I currently have an e90 330 which is great but will need something more economical for the new commute. I’d like something comfortable (think well damped but not baggy/barge), at least 40mpg, automatic and reasonably fun to drive when you want to engage a bit more. The commute is over A roads and a few smaller B roads through hills. I don’t want another BMW as have had a few now and would like to try something else. Budget is only about £5k or a really good finance deal. Suggestions please!
