The £100 Mr2 MK2
Discussion
So Browsing IMOC as i always do and came across the following advert :-
[quote="toxo"]I have a 1991 'H' reg Rev1 UK NA car for sale. It is a non runner and will require you to come and remove it from the MK18 area, preferably on a flatbed or a trailer!
Car was originally a UK 3S-FE. At some point in its life it was converted to a V6. Right now it has a UK Rev4 NA engine swap, the engine has about 160k on it. I did the ECU harness conversion as it was in a right state when I got hold of it. It started and ran perfect. Then the starter broke. Right now the starter is in pieces and part of it is lodged in the gearbox. It will require the gearbox to be removed to retrieve the remains of the starter - it WILL NOT come out through the starter hole. A good starter motor is included.
The 2 bolt holes for the front gearbox mount are stripped. This is a fairly common problem on all MK2 gearboxes and is easily remedied with a timesert or a helicoil. The actual mount on the car is a brand new powerflex.
The gear linkage brackets need reattaching properly (the reason for removing the starter motor in the first place).
I believe the entire coolant system is present, but not installed. It has an aftermarket alloy rad up front, the hoses are all in the boot. Currently the system is dry/drained.
The driveshafts are unbolted at the outer CV joints. So, the stub is in the hub, but the rest is detached from the car but provided.
I had started putting the car back to standard - when I got it it had some horrendous 17" MOMO alloys and Rogue rev6 rear lights. It now has original alloys which are freshly refurbished with good tyres, and stock rear lights.
It's got a stereo/amp install in it behind the passenger seat. I haven't investigated it. It also has an aftermarket immobiliser with a touch fob.
The car has some corrosion to the passenger side rear sill. I'm not sure it would pass an MOT without some welding work. That aside it appears to be mostly solid. It's a sunroof model and being a white rev1 the body stripe is black, as are the sills (suggesting they've been repaired before).
For reasons that are not clear it has a Celica alternator, which is slightly smaller than stock.
One of the doors is a bit rotten. Another door is included.
The boot is FULL of spare parts. There are at least 4 rear light clusters, another starter motor, tons of bolts, brackets, spare engine mounts, wiring, etc. I am confident that all the wiring work is done, and all that is needed to make it work again is gearbox removal, starter motor swap, coolant pipe reinstallation, gear linkage reinstallation, driveshaft reinstallation, and fluids.
The garage it's at has no power or any other services, so you will just need to remove it - it can't be worked on where it is.
Last but not least, it has the highly sought after blue interior
£Offers.

As a MR2 Owner since 2000 I sent a reply saying Interested but no idea what to offer, as i already have a mr2 mk3 racecar, kia picanto, freelander 2 and Mini cooper S and access to a road going MK3 MR2. Didn't really mneed something else.. but when can you have too many?.
Shortly recieved a reply saying her really needed it gone... so a deal was done for £100!!
I have no idea what i was buying.
I was dropping on my wifes old mini she cannot drive any more, and i could pick up the MR2 on the way home worked out perfect.
Bye bye Mini

So Still with no idea what i was gettting really i turned up to this

John was swapping over the wheels back to the original MOMO's as he could sell the originals..
Pushing it out and straight onto the trailer.. it was chucking it down with rain. so didn't even look at it.
Also got a book load of stuff inc all the hoses, Turbo engine lid, and spare drivers door to replace the rusty one

After a very wet drive home it got left on the drive
Yesterday i managed to get some pictures and a quick look over.
It has a lot less rust that i expected.. but thats about it at the moment
when i get off the trailer and trackday done this weekend.. I will get a good look and see what i've got and give it a clean
Heres is the first pics

thanks peoples..
Managed a look over it on the trailer last night.
It is model with No ABS or power steering.
One arch needs some rust attentions but both sills look very good
interior when put back together again is pretty clean.. so fingers crossed will be a nice little purchase
It does indeed need the gearbox removing, as part of the starter motor is stuck. But i have removed loads a MR gearboxes and engines now should be fine, much easier having a scissor ramp!!!
Wife keeps telling me to fit a v6 back in it and use it as my nice daily.. we shall what transpires

I suppose with everything that is happening i should give this thread an update!
I would like to start off.. Still have no idea where this project is going yet!!
Some time ago i got the MR2 Sprint car out of the garage for this to go onto the ramp
Starting to off load from the trailer..

you can see the rust in the drivers door. Luckily it came with a new one
IMG_20200327_123147 by Pete Mason, on Flickr
Not a huge fan of the wheels but i do like the offset.. a lot!
IMG_20200327_123204 by Pete Mason, on Flickr
Before Putting the car on the ramp. I gave it a good going over, checking for any potential cracks etc, and some paint
IMG_20200327_123317 by Pete Mason, on Flickr
Into the garage it goes.. for how long....... Who knows

IMG_20200327_155207 by Pete Mason, on Flickr
On the surface it does not (didn't) look too bad... you know where this is going..
The sills had been replaced, this is one the worst places for the MR2's to rust.
Just after getting it in there the lock down happened.
I am an engineer at a fragrance factory, Making smells for everything, including soaps and hand sanitizers so our factory is one of the ones staying open... unfortunately the wife is in the high risk group. I have been very fortunate due to other things i do, i already have a works laptop so I am now working from home as support and going through procedures etc (joys) but it is for the best.
Not fixing things at work has given me itchy feet.. so decided to fully strip the MR2 down (it is not like i need it) see what we have and rebuild from there..
The strip down begins..
IMG_20200330_152631 by Pete Mason, on Flickr
The pile on the floor behind it was what was in the boot .. There was lot of stuff.. Inc rear lights, front lights, Engine mounts, wiring, poly bushes. the list goes on..
IMG_20200330_152641 by Pete Mason, on Flickr
Wheels and bumper off.. the rust starts to show
Look at the floor!!!

It is actually not as bad as it was. i have had a good poke its not thin and still solid. it seems solid.. but i need a proper go at it some point..
Decided at this point that I am still unsure what is happening with the car, but if i want it back alive again then it will be a full nut and bolt rebuild.. or it will be sold for parts.. either way. everything is coming off. every nut and bolt will be coming off down to bareshell..
Time to get the rear suspension and engine out..
Dropped in one go

Next day wanted to see how deep this rust goes.. There was already a hole in the end of the passenger sill.. so i got a screw driver and poked....
this is what we have

IMG_20200409_101218 by Pete Mason, on Flickr

hmm It looks like they left the old sill in place and just welded the new on over the top.... great....
the other side shows the repair that was done..
IMG_20200409_103104 by Pete Mason, on Flickr
no comment..

Where the car has been a 114hp model.. then a v6 and now a rev 4 na its undergone some wiring changes.. Jon done a great job getting this engine up and running.. i have taken loads of photos and notes of what goes where,., but what actually happens engien wise is still unsure

IMG_20200410_141112 by Pete Mason, on Flickr
They got delivered and sat in the porch under quarantine for 12 hours
In the time. I knew i would want to get access into my large shed,, but it was trash, full of just stuff.. so it all got emptied out..and this was the pile of rubbish left after sorting
IMG_20200411_144815 by Pete Mason, on Flickr
(this has now all been sorted and piled neatly ready for when the tips re open, and what can be recycled has been/ will be)
Now i can get to the Vice, pillar drill and dug the welder out too, which needs some attention
IMG_20200411_144823 by Pete Mason, on Flickr
Back to the car..
Now i had somewhere to put everything, starting at the very rear of the car and started to removed (or snap) every bolt on the car.
The boot and rear bumper area now has everything off , labelled and boxed.
Next up was the engine bay
IMG_20200413_100201 by Pete Mason, on Flickr
Then another parcel arrived from Ebay..
My steering wheel in the freelander is horrid. Everything else is lovely. but the wheel is melted/worn/ twisting.
In these times i did not want to have to pay for a new wheel, and this was something recommened on the forums.. So for £14 and some time i thought give it a go..

same on the other side
Only thing left is to remove the fuel filler and lines.. so decide next to drop the fuel tank.. Then i can do any grinding i wanted without fuel tank worries
Repositioned the ramp lift points so i'd be able to get the tank out (hopefully) and get to the sills when i come to cut them off
IMG_20200413_152946 by Pete Mason, on Flickr
More of this car on the floor i thinks
IMG_20200413_152932 by Pete Mason, on Flickr
and the boxes doing a great job
IMG_20200413_152928 by Pete Mason, on Flickr
I have started disconnecting all handbrake cables and fuel lines..
I have done my back in a few weeks ago and it is still playing up so i am doing a bit at a time.. I am now ready to drop the tank but that can wait for another day.
I am back working from home (working hard you can see
) after having a week off for the wifes bday and just some fun times while doing the above
Only thing i have not ever done on cars is welding and painting. I would intend on doing them to this car, So this could be a good learning curve
Where this project is going i am still unsure. I am going to carry on stripping it down..
It will go one of two ways.. Either just get all the parts off, sell them and put towards a boxster S (had one before, i don't tinker with them, i love to tinker, but they are awesome things)
Or. complete build back up using any parts i can find on face book markets place etc etc.. the bonus to this it would be a car u built up from scratch that i can do anything i want to, that i know inside and out, I also keep going back to MR2's this one must be no.15 i think?(probably higher than that actually).. the other is a porsche.. so i am still undecided..
If i rebuild ideally would be All rust gone, Wide arch(maybe), Bomex/border front and Bomex/Border skirts, Rev 3 rear with spats, then K20 engine?
I would love to hear your thoughts on what i should do and what direction this should take?
thats me done for now, please let me know your thoughts.. I am off to do some work
I would like to start off.. Still have no idea where this project is going yet!!

I am back working from home (working hard you can see
) after having a week off for the wifes bday and just some fun times while doing the aboveOnly thing i have not ever done on cars is welding and painting.
I am off to do some work
Great write up there! Good job on the steering wheel too, must feel much nicer than the melted plastic.
I can't offer any advice on where to go because I know nothing about MR2s but I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product.
I've been watching Mighty Car Mods recent MR2 videos and it looks a bit of a pig to work on?

I don't think they are a pig to work on.. It may be i am just immune to it as worked on them for so long!!I can't offer any advice on where to go because I know nothing about MR2s but I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product.
