My father's 74 now, recovering from double pneumonia and is self isolating (for obvious reasons). This is dangerous as he's surfing the net for a new toy.

He's found two and is unsure which would be the better car, just for the odd jaunt on a sunny Sunday. He's never had a 'modern' Aston, had a DB6, DBS, and older V8 Vantage, but now wants something he doesn't have to tinker with.

I prefer the Vantage but that's purely on looks, he's said that the clutches on those are prone to failure but isn't too fussed about it as he'd probably do 5,000kms pa max.

All advice / opinions very welcome please as I'd like to give him a few tips from experienced owners before he just buggers off and buys one, despite the fact that he should be staying indoors thumbup

Here are the two that he's found, hope the links work.

Sounds like the DB9 would be the one for him.
More relaxed drive and a proper auto g/box.

The V8 Vantage looks quite good considering the high mileage. Interesting about this car is the unusual black 4.3 inlet manifold which could possibly indicate a power upgrade (N400 or Bamford Rose or whatever). The advert does not mention this.

I prefer the Vantage but if my father was still alive I'd buy him a DB9.

My thoughts after a very quick glance at the adverts.

When I am 74 years old, my ideal Aston Martin will be a 4.7 Vantage manual with a twin plate clutch.
I hope your father will stay indoors to keep safe and eliminate risk. In the UK, older citizens will be the last selected to have ventilators.
After the present situation is over, a 4.7 might become available.

DB9 - did not realise Germany has the four USA orange running lights. Could it be an import?
Vantage - very shiny, high mileage.

I think it depends on whether or not he's a true manual guy. I'm 77 and all of my toys (Aston, Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, etc.) are manuals. Nevertheless, if it was me and the choice was between an early sport shift high mileage '07 Vantage or a fully automatic lower mileage '07 DB9, the choice would be simple, I'd pick the DB9. I very much prefer the looks of the Vantage (that's why I have one), but the DB9 tranny is the same as in my wife's Volvo S80 and virtually trouble free which makes for more carefree fun on that Sunday drive (and you don't have to worry about having to use reverse). However, if the Vantage was a true manual as opposed to an automated manual there would be no contest, but the '07 sport shift just doesn't cut it for me. It's not like a PDK. Hope your dad has a speedy recovery so he can enjoy either car!

If he wants a sports car, get a V8 Vantage. If he wants a GT, get a DB9. Either can play the other's role, but each has its focus. Hope he makes a quick recovery!

Thanks for all the comments.

He's an automatic guy, through and through. But prefers the look of the Vantage, That particular one has had a bonnet respray to get rid of stone chips and has obviously been detailed to within an inch of its life biggrin

The DB9 does look like a US import, although there's no mention of it in the advert is has the orange lights and also MPH is the dominant feature on the speedo, so that's a non-starter for him.

I think I've managed to make him see sense and to give it another few weeks before he goes out looking at them (he was even Googling 'how to decontaminate a car from viral infections') paperbag

Going by what you say it looks like the DB9 would be better for him and I'll mention that, but the Vantage is so bloody pretty. We'll see.

I second this.

Thanks for the story anyway, in those weird days picturing a senior in self-isolation deemed dangerous because he is browsing for an Aston has made me laugh. smile

All the sympathies!

The display can change from MPH to KMH easliy.

Press & hold the "Read" button & the left stalk button simultaneously to flip between km to miles.

If auto is his bag, get a DB9, i've got one and it's brilliant, he won't regret it.
