Company Car Decision
Discussion
Hi All
I've recently-ish been given the option at work to order a company car. There are a few options, some of which I don't think merit consideration (Ford KA+ indeed).
I've narrowed it down to my two best options.
VW Golf Mk8 LIFE 2l or a BMW 1 series 116d SE Step Auto. Both diesel and both 5 door.
Both will end up costing me a small fortune a month in BIK but I wondered if either of these vehicles had any "Deal breakers" I should consider before ordering.
Also I'm also allowed <£1000 in optional extras, but obviously this will also affect my BIK tax payments. Is there any recommended extras you guys would say are necessary to seriously improve the experience with either of these cars.
Cheers for your help in advance guys.

You say you have been given the option of a company car. What are the other options? Allowance etc.?
I'm currently driving round in a pool car (standard procedure until the end of a probationary period). I can order a new company car or use a personal vehicle and claim back the mileage. There is a "cash alternative" but the value is far too low to be useful. Around £350 per month pre tax and I do around 30k miles a year. This money would have to cover a car+maintenance, insurance, breakdown cover etc. I appreciate with this I would save the BIK but then I would just lose out via Income tax instead. Our options were pretty poor on our company's car, golf 1.6 diesel SE trims.
I ended up taking a car allowance and running an M140i now running 1.6 golf but in the GT trim and does make a difference.
Depends how much time you'll spend in your car OP. The more mileage the more sense having a car you actually can live with makes but companies are stress fee......punctures, breakdowns, repairs, insurance (biggie especially in major cities), road tax etc all taken care off.

I’m exhausted and have had a beer so if this is mad please ignore.
If you work for any non-blue chip company then isn’t the company car the very best option right now? A car you can hand back if your job gets cut, or company goes under? An allowance will likely mean a personal purchase or lease which is your problem for the duration, irrespective of whether you have an income or not?

OP wants the company car, not the allowance. OP asking which company car.If you work for any non-blue chip company then isn’t the company car the very best option right now? hi mate,
I have had the new 116d for two weeks and it is great, rides nice, interior quality is great, dash is nice. does about 55 Mpg as expected.
however as your limited to the SE spec with only 1000 to spend on options i cant see you getting much kit, Seat heaters, folding mirrors, connected drive and the upgraded I drive 7.
Ive never driven a golf but i can see the ACC is standard on the life spec which will probably be a god send if your doing 30k a year. and the heated seats are only 285 another must. this will be to pricy for the 1 series
Ive seen alot of reviews an these seem pretty much nip and tuck now the beemer is FWD and more of a regular hatch.

That 30,000 miles will get you another £6k/year (untaxed) to add to your £350/month (@45p/mile for the first 10k and 25p/mile thereafter, with a 50mpg car), which is not uselessEdited by syl on Wednesday 18th March 22:18
