Hello All,
Possibly one for the barge thread..
Was just wondering if anyone here knows much about the Citroen C5 Exclusive? A 2.0 diesel auto estate has popped up locally and I confess I rather like it. Or a lot like it. It's a bit leggy on 146k but it is a 1 previous owner if that makes any difference. MOT history is reassuring.
The Exclusive has a number of bespoke items all waiting to go wrong including hydro pneumatic suspension and electronic parking brake which is probably the same design as on my old CMax so alarm bells should be ringing! Obviously an old diesel could blow up tomorrow as could the auto box but equally being the Ford/PSA 2.0Tdci it might run reliably to mega miles.
Most importantly of all it has massaging heated leather seats.
It's not much dosh, has 11months MOT and I don't need any loans or anything so if it grenaded next week I could live with it.
But is there a chance it won't? What is there to look out for on this particular ageing complex French car?

I looked at them years ago. Decided to either get one of them or a Mondeo TitX, whichever of them came up first. The Mondeo won as a nice example became available.... Thankfully
TBH that car is loaded with toys. They're decent cars but do suffer from electrical issues. The depollution system fault is very real and costs anything from £20 to £2K to sort, saying that you could just live with it as it doesn't cause the car to go into limp.
IMO it's still overpriced. Mondeo is a better car and also cheaper, it's 10 years old so already on borrowed time.
Saying that.... If it dropped to £1500 then that's different

@Sir Bagalot - A Mondeo Estate TitX is my #1 choice but one has not cropped up locally since the one I was 2 hours away from test driving was sold from under me. This one is relatively near. It is a pre-facelift 2.2 diesel titX in hearse spec. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202... Was sort of hoping for a facelift but could be flexible. He needs to drop a bit in price.
@Mikal83 - would be keen to know what your ownership experience was like. Was yours the Exclusive with the HP suspension?

We bought it for mainly towing a caravan and the occasional long trip. It returned around 50 mpg on the flat at 70mph ish and an average of 45 ish overall. Towing 1400kg we got between 20 and 25 mpg, which when compared to what a comparable petrol would have got was proper job.
It was comfortable, easy to drive, quiet and unlike some, I found the steering wheel inputs easy and the feel fine. I liked the subtle orange glow from the interior lights. The car also had decent main lights but I didnt like the fancy pants cornering lights that came on when turning. Servicing was easy but getting the under tray off needed a ramp.
The starter motor broke at 40,000 miles and was a hefty 300 squid to replace and lots of leccy bits go thru the same wiring, windows/door locks etc.
The wiper motors blow, but the recal was for 2009+ models despite the 2008 car exactly the bloody same, grrrrrr. Expensive. Seats comfortable and adjustable, mine for some reason werent heated! The handbrake was electric, was OK. The ABS system also has been known to fail.
Would I buy it again........maybe, BUT would probably look at a Mondeo titanium first. We were looking at the obvious 3.

Paint was fine, no flaking. It used front pads quickly and also being heavy and FWD went thru tyres quickly as well. Its a solid car. Feels chunky but wafts along nicely. Wife didnt enjoy driving it as she said it was "too big" for her. Turning circle average.

Motor usually bulletproof, usual issue is the lower pulley rubber perishing, check for belt alignment when running
Check windows go up and down, wires can rust/break
Battery needs to be good, eco mode will kick in early if not - tailgate if electric may not close under power
Check suspension over all the settings, low, drive and rough road
Major issue with these is leaking steering racks from the pinion shaft, known Citroen issue. Prices vary from £3-400 recon or over £1200 from Citroen plus fitting
Uses same fluid reservoir as suspension so if it flashes suspension fault 55mph 99% it's leaking
Even if you don't buy that one at least test drive it, fantastic ride and enough poke even with the auto

Thanks again all. Much appreciated. I am getting the feeling that there is more Russian roulette with this compared to a Mondeo TitX, which is my only other candidate. Guess I need to call the chappie to see what if any issues have (vaguely) recently cropped up and maybe been tackled already.
I do think the Tourer in Exclusive spec looks cracking.
Note - Happy with prospect of family 'boating' as opposed to rushing. We also have a 330d E91 so I can always take that for thrashing when I need to get it out of my system.

That does look like a very nice car and same colour as my old one. (I even have a small bottle of touch up). Under 2k.....! I would be very very tempted IF I was looking for a big mile muncher like it is. Mileage...wouldnt bother me. Check its history, go for a drive and pull out a wad of 20's and wave them under his nose....all 1750 of them!
