Windows 10 freezing on installation? HP Pavilion PC
Discussion
It seems odd posting this as someone who knows a bit about IT but this has got me stumped. Trying to install Windows 10 Home on an HP Pavilion All in One and after the initial format of the drive (SSD, though same happens with old skool SATA), it just freezes at 1% after gathering information to install Windows files. Have tried Partition Magic, wiped the disk with DiskPart, checked for bad sectors on SSD (none) tried GPT and MBR, Legacy and UEFI.
Same thing happend. Legit copy of Windows 10 64 bit. Desperately need it for Skype conference later as stuck at home due to Coronavirus lockdown in London. Is it a memory issue? It has 8 GB (2x 4GB Samsung), there are different theories like reducing the memory to make it install. Brand new SSD (Samsung 500 GB) New 1TB WD SATA.
Any ideas what's going wrong? Updsted BIOS, Tried with Secure Boot off, on, Legacy and UEFI. Will trade pasta and loo roll for answers

Are you using the latest version of the installer?
There were a number of issues with video conflict etc on a number of prior versions of windows 10. I was building a new system last August and had a heck of a time that one kind soul on here helped me out with.
Yep, latest copy from Microsoft, downloaded today. Not sure if memory fault, I bought this off ebay, I think the guy whipped out the correct RAM and put any old crap in...There were a number of issues with video conflict etc on a number of prior versions of windows 10. Tried to change to MBR, not sure if that is the issue...

Pull out one stick of memory and only have one drive (the drive you want to be OS) connected. Try again.Tried to change to MBR, not sure if that is the issue...

Looks like I will have plenty to keep me going with if things in London tail off due to COVID-19 shutdowns... I'll let you know how the cloning went...

Tried that, no joy. Got to 43% and froze. Do think it's a memory fault, the bus speed is wrong, I checked what it should be and ordered up the correct RAM. Will try cloning a good disk out of a much older Touchsmart 7320 using Partition Magic's cloner tool. Swtiched back to a regular SATA from an SSD. Again, brand new. The joys of Ebay... bought it from a guy in Lincolnshire who seems to have a few of these. Hoping it won't be a financial disaster like a certain YouTuber with a Carrera GT on very high mileage and finance. So far, two hard drives, now memory.

Definitely looks like bad memory. I'd always prefer a clean install as the wrong chipset drivers can cause win 10 to hang. What memory was it? If it was DDR3 I have a few spare sticks around I could pop in the post (only 2GB ones but definitely work) . Thanks! I ordered the correct memory (I think the current bus speed is too low), I checked what my one should have. Cloning the disk failed, so went back to SATA and fresh install with clean download of Windows 10. The memory should arrive tomorrow, (1 x 8GB) but so far, it's behaving. I have to see if it makes any difference... hopefully so

Get the MB to do a memory check. Bus speed is not it as the figures quoted are the maximum speed and it should work at any speed. If it's the wrong type ie ddr3 or 4 it shouldn't even fit. Could be a faulty chip, but more likely either a corrupt download or MB fault.
Well, it's made no difference... new memory, still not working. Re installed Windows, it was good until being rebooted where it took over 10 minutes to load Windows 10. Not sure if there's issues with the Q055NA, but no point throwing good money after bad. Saw a better spec machine on Ebay, (Q105NA), paid cash and collected it. So far, so good. Test will come on start up tomorrow. Had the genuine HP recovery partition so should be okay.
Having tried HDD, memory, SSD, only other thing could have been CPU or board. I will flog it and let someone else worry about it. Thanks for the advice though

I have a Dell XPS27, I lost count of the number of times the upgrade from Win 8 to Win 10 crashed at first time desktop.
I tried everything, eventually Dell came out and changed the mobo, but would only reinstall Win 8 for me.
Once the engineer left I installed Win 10 and it worked first time and is still running strong to this day.
Maybe just a grumpy mobo like my machine?

Such a surprise that my much older HP Touchsmart 7320 has had no issues...I tried everything, eventually Dell came out and changed the mobo, but would only reinstall Win 8 for me.

I think it could be windows 10 updates not agreeing with the board somewhere, sometimes it would work for a few days without a fault, then go back to taking 20 minutes to boot.
Wiped hard drive, re installed Windows 10 to basic initial setup, put it on Ebay and flogged it cheap
It could be issues with my Microsoft login or profile, but no longer my problem. Managed to sell it before Corona Lockdown but as a quick sale for cash (Boris Johnson has stopped non essential purchases like electronics this evening)...I have seen the same model going for £500, but I sold it at a fraction of the price. A motherboard can be bought for only £50, so I see it more as a restoration project for an enthusiast, a labour of love like Paul Wallace (Supercars of London) restoring his aging Lamborghini

Sometimes it can be a bit to much effort fault finding and replacing bits - especially if you are not a computer tinkerer at heart. All-in-ones are effectively laptops in a different form-factor so are always more fiddly than a proper desktop (though they can look pretty and take up minimal desk space).I think it could be windows 10 updates not agreeing with the board somewhere, sometimes it would work for a few days without a fault, then go back to taking 20 minutes to boot.

I would list electronics as essential - we are all supposed to be working from home and can't do that without electronics
