Wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a decent wifi extender for my specific requirements. My router is downstairs, and I would like to extend the signal to reach two bedrooms upstairs, sadly on the opposite side of the house rather than directly above the room the router is in. This is for 2 children to have their school chromebooks in their rooms to use google classrooms during the school shutdown. Not for gaming or any of that nonsense, just school work.

My broadband is pretty decent BT fibre, and I use a BT HomeHub 4. Standard sized 1970s built 4 bed detached house, but the internal walls are solid breeze block rather than partition.

I'm vaguely aware that some are better for horizontal extension rather than vertical, so thanks for any suggestions/recommendations!

Speak to BT and see if they'll supply you a couple of their 'whole home' mesh discs, kick up a stink, tell them the hub is no good... Or you can buy them.

Those look good, thanks. Are they plug and play?

Most are pretty easy to setup, I will say that one linked is supposedly not up to much speed wise when I researched this.

I ended up with these (although I got a three pack for £90) : https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-Deco-M4-Seamless-...

I am very impressed with them!

Cheers! What's the difference between that 2-pack and this one?

Obvs the cheaper one has one of those cylindrical jobs and one smaller plug-type, whilst the dearer is 2 cylindrical jobbies. What's the advantage of the dearer package please?

Simplest explanation taken from a review:

"TP-Link Deco E4 is an AC1200 mesh wireless system but do not expect speeds that match other AC1200 systems, because there is one important technical limitation: the Ethernet ports on the devices that are part of this mesh WiFi system, are limited to 100 Mbps, unlike other systems that work at 1 Gbps. This means that, even if you have a fast internet connection of 500 Mbps or more, your internet connection and WiFi are going to work at maximum 100 Mbps on the Deco E4. However, there is also an upside to this. The speed you get may be lower than on other AC1200 mesh WiFi systems, but it is flawlessly stable, especially on the 5 GHz band. Just look at the transfer below, made on a laptop, connected to the 5 GHz WiFi frequency, in a room separated by one wall from the main station. We have not seen such a stable wireless throughput in years. It is almost a perfectly straight line."

Just ran a test, 8.4mbps download, 3.92 up. It's BT Infinity Broadband, thought it was faster than that. I'm less than a mile from the exchange.

Sorry, ETA, just walked to the room where the router is and got 38.5 down, 15.8 up. This is on my mobile phone.

yikes

Ok first things first, find out what your connection speed is supposed to be and get onto BT to get that sorted, while you are there request a new router (the 6 is much better than the 4) once those things are sorted I would then be looking at improving the wifi.

Go here and put your postcode in and see what they say you are supposed to be getting: https://www.bt.com/broadband/availability

ETA - Just saw your edit, ok 34 is much better. I would still be requesting a new router and seeing if they will do you a decent deal on a whole home wifi disc, these actually review very well. If they wont give you a decent deal on one then the mesh stuff you linked to will be fine, they have a limited wifi speed of 100mbs, your connection is 34 so there is little need to go and source the high speed stuff.

Sorry mate, see above edit. I didn't realise being in a different room affects the line speed.

if you have a spare router kicking about just use it as a repeater (well if you can get an RJ45 to that room) cool

Without meaning to sound like a complete ahole, I am not sure the OP has the requisite skills for this, I also think it unlikely he has a spare router knocking around.

Righto, thanks. So the 50 quid job I linked to would be fine? IN that package, what is the small square plug type device, compared to the large cylinder thing? What makes the two-pack of cylinder devices which you linked to first so much better that it's twice the price?

Sorry for the numpty questions. It's really not my field.

Yes.

The small square plug device does the same thing as the cylindrical thing but is in a different form factor and it will have its own limitations, probably none you will notice or even care about...

The one I linked would be more useful if you had a faster internet connection.

No worries on the questions, happy to help.
