Why this fking corona thing is as high profile as it is.

Its killed way less than the flu does every single fking year, its only killed people with health complications, yes its spread globally but 95% if not more of people are recovering in most countries.

Funny how the number recovered doesent get deleted off the number of cases splashed over the news every day. This is going to fk up the worlds economy all for a different strain of flu.

Why have the media gone to the lengths they have this time in scaremongering people? Its absolutely crazy.

Yes it might be more contagious than normal flu and we dont have a vaccine but the numbers are so minute its unbelievable.

I dread to think how this generation would cope with a war, give me bloody strength.

The virus itself is not lethal to most people.

However, it is very contagious.

If the minority of people who it is lethal towards get it, then the Health Service would be overwhelmed. As in, people turned away and dying.

People being allowed to die is obviously not acceptable in a modern world, so the transmission of the virus has to be controlled so that the vulnerable getting it do not all get it at once.

They are trying to manage the flow of people into hospitals to spread out the infection rate.

This unfortunately means compromising the lives of the many to help the few, but the few are grandparents, people with chronic illnesses, etc.

The first of that category possibly helped in the last big war ironically, so let's not begrudge them a little longer eh?

The polarity of its effects is unprecedented. A healthy person cops it, they cough a bit, maybe get the flu fatigue, and a temperature, a few days later, job jobbed. If someone with a compromised immune system / underlying condition gets it, and it gets to their lungs, from evidence garnered from autopsies thus far, it causes damage that’s never been seen by the experts previously. That’s the biggest issue with it, as far as I can tell.

My local hospital is in prep canceling routine stuff and getting ready for the onslaught. The calm before the storm.

They're not doing it because daily mail says so.

My wife has compared it to 'the phony war'

By the way, if 95% of the UK population got the virus and recovered but 5% didn't, that means 3 MILLION people dying in this country alone.

Let's also assume that we do nothing but only a third of the population gets the virus with a 5% fatality rate - that still means 1 million people dying. Statistically, someone you know would die from this virus in this scenario.

People need to understand that the flu doesn't kill all those people at once...

A season's flu will ramp up from a slow start...like this is, but with maybe a tenth as many deaths...

But my point is there is no way that many people will get in anyway thats such a ridiculous prediction. Especially if people have to stay home with a cough, theres no need to shut the whole world down for the others who are showing no symptoms.

3000 people have died in Italy this month alone.

Had they not taken the measures they have many more would be dead as their hospitals are full.

if you go into ITU you have about a 50% chance of getting better.

They have more people in ITU currently than we have available beds. We are already at capacity in London.

So unless we stop the spread shedloads of people will die, in short order. Our medics will get ill and exacerbate the situation.

It really isn't difficult to understand if you want to.

You can spread the virus even if you have no symptoms. HTH.

Can we see what model your view that there is "no way that many people will get in" is based on please?

Read this:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/gdpr-consent/?next_...

see if you feel the same way; perhaps think about it, imagining that you had parents aged 74 and 79.

But I do agree that in the standard fashion these days. there is a little bit too much news reporting, but you don't have to watch it all

That's a silly number. WHO estimate was 3.4% of those who were tested, but those were only people with severe symptoms, about 5% - 119,000 from 70 million. It's a lot, but it's not orders of magnitude worse than the flu.

Just thought I'd better quote this post. 9000 deaths and increasing by the day. Billions of pounds of business being lost all over the world. Don't panic everyone, PetrolSmasher says it is just media hype!

I was using the OP’s numbers, not mine.

Worth also considering that its a new virus, so nobody has any immunity to it (or didn't before it started, I guess there are quite a few who do now) nor do we have a vaccine as we have for flu.

You clearly have no clue about the logic of virus transmission or that you can have this virus without symptoms.

I am no scaremonger. I roll my eyes at people panic buying.
I am not worried that I will die from this virus or that there’ll be meltdown.

But the measures in place are necessary.

Business is being lost because of the scaremongering this is the problem.

2015/2016 was our most recent bad flu year, uk 28,000 deaths, with people dying in hospital corridors, it did make the news but you've probably forgotten now (I had).

That year was due to H1N1 strain going large before the vaccine was well distributed amongst those that need it, 2017/2018 was no cake walk though with 25,000 deaths.

If this is only half as bad again as that we're in trouble and people will die who need not, but I agree the response has been over done, this £350 billion available now to bail out business would have been better spent on the lessons learnt from 2015 making the NHS more robust.
