Mk6 Golf GTI or Astra H VXR
Discussion
To be fair the Astra H is a good 5 years older than the MK6 Golf, really you want to compare it to the Astra G in which case I would have the Astra over the Golf, its the better car despite the PH loathing of all Vauxhalls regardless of if they are actually good.
But if it is really between the H and the MK6, get the Golf it is miles ahead of the H. Although I think the H is the better looking car they are a little long in the teeth now and aren't as reliable.

I think you mean the Astra J. Astra G came out in 1998But if it is really between the H and the MK6, get the Golf it is miles ahead of the H. Although I think the H is the better looking car they are a little long in the teeth now and aren't as reliable.

The Astra H is to old to be compared to a MK6 GTI but if that's the two then I'd pick the Golf, now if you can stretch to a J then I'd be buying the J they're no less reliable & they're a nice place to be.

I had an Astra H VXR a while back. How fun it is depends on what you want it for and your previous experience.
They understeer horrifically, torque steer pretty strongly and do have turbo seal issues. I’d take a puny that the golf will be much more reliable.
That said, I loved it. It was mad, fast, the torque steer meant you were wrestling with it to keep it straight, and if you want to tune them there’s plenty of options.
Regus tuning in the south, Courtney motorport or Thorney motorsport we’re the go-to tuners back in 07 when I got mine. Basic starting point was eibach pro springs, precat decat and whiteline tear anti roll bar and stage 1 map. Once it’s lower and stiffer you can consider quaife LSD, coilovers, 3” exhaust, inter cooler and stage 2 map (can’t remember if you need to do something with the actuator and maf for stage 2), the stage 3 is trickier but silly power. Fast at the lights, sound and look cool, but a golf will still beat you on a B road.
Edit - also I was a hooligan 19 year old so I fitted the demographic. No real driving skill, straight line pulls at the lights, thought I was a driving god etc etc. Was the fastest car I’d had by miles which aided the pleasure. If you’re a proper good driver and it’s not your first 200+ bhp turbo then take a test drive before you get too invested. There’s a lot to like, but loads not to too.

I’ve wanted a vxr for the longest time, it’s really just the problems that come along with them. A gti is just another choice i have in my price range but i’m not really too keen on the looks etc, and the fact i know a lot of people who own gti’s, so don’t want to be a sheep really. They understeer horrifically, torque steer pretty strongly and do have turbo seal issues. If you’re set on a VXR, consider the limited runs (Nurburgring, arctic edition, vxr-r etc). May hold value better and be a bit more unique. There’s a nicer spec’ed Nurburgring stage 3 in the PH classified But has done 80 odd K now.
The insignia vxr was a very different car but I always like the look of them if I wasn’t dead set on a hatch.
What’s the budget? Is an S3 from similar year in scope? Or an old monaro if you want a V8 and to be different?
