Hello

have recently lost 4wd in the car (constant traction control lighting up)

went to a garage today finally and they found the pump was filthy and blocked.

£122.50 cleaned and oil change.

driving home nothing has improved. just as bad as it was.

any ideas?

car has now done 48k miles

new ps4s which have only covered 500 - 800miles

thanks

What car is it? I'm assuming a VAG product of some kind?

So are you saying it is breaking traction or something ? or just that a light is lit on the dash ?

If a new pump is required then there’s a place online called Haldex Repairs that sells the genuine pumps at a reasonable price. Until then il give the usual response, what did the scan with Vagcom say?

Also I’m not sure if something basic, like a wheel speed sensor can do this? And only let the garage use genuine oil if that’s been replaced. With something like this you really should be going to a VAG indi.

You also didnt mention if they changed the filter? For a genuine filter and oil I’m guessing not for what you paid as labour would almost have been free. There is the filter that HAS to be changed with oil at 40k miles, and there is ALSO a very fine gauze/mesh that needs to be cleaned.

i don't think they changed the filter.

he said he used an air brush to clean the pump which was clogged. and then put new oil in.

Then do not go back to that garage.

Have you serviced the Haldex unit before?

never been serviced. this was my closest audi specialist.

they did say this is what they will try first. ring them if this didn't sort it as this was the cheapest option

Cheap and Haldex and DSG shouldn’t go in the same sentence. They’ve cost you more in the long run. Did they not scan the car for faults?

he said he scanned the car and they were no errors.

when on the ramp they back wheels did spin (didn't say how much)

could a dirty pothole knock something out? or does it not work like that?

Strange. They are pretty robust things. Have a look at the above website I mentioned. I think they have an FAQ section. Also may be worth joining a TT specific forum.

spoken to the garage.

they said I need a new haldex pump setup.

looking at haldex replacements the pump itself is £200.

due to no error codes this might not be the problem anyway!!!

Speak/email these guys. If the fault light is on then it will have logged a code. Further to that I’m sure there are some live parameters that can be logged. But the garage will need specific Vagcom software. Being a specialist they should have it.

Anywhere with a decent level of VAG diagnostic software (or anyone who owns VCDS) will be able to run output tests to check for operation of the haldex pump.

If the light was on indicating a fault then there should have been associated Fault code, although it is not uncommon for the pump to fail mechanically without triggering codes on this generation of Haldex.

Proper servicing is vital to prevent the pump screen becoming blocked and damaging the pump. (This has happened on cars with as little as 20k miles.
