Cheap reliable motoring?

Im looking to buy a car this weekend -

Criteria are as follows

Cheap to run
Cheap to buy (£1500 max)
Cheap to tax
Cheap to insure
Reliable
Fun if possible
Petrol only

Usual suspects are the Aygo/C1/107, Alto, Pixo, Colt and the like.

But is there anything else?

Are you specifically after a 3 door?

If not and 5 doors are also acceptable then I would add the latest Mk1 Ford Focus 1.6 petrol that you can find to the list. You probably wouldn't need your entire budget for that.

You can also get 3 doors. Not sure I would bother with the ST170 though. I feel the 1.6 is the sweetspot given your criteria.

Sadly when I see threads where people need the cheapest to buy, cheapest to run, most reliable an don't appear give the impression they are the sorts who know what a tool box and a Haynes manual are for i tend to think that maybe they should stick to public transport or cycle or at least make friends with a mechanic who can be paid in beers/favours.

There is no one car that can be recommended that is guaranteed to be cheap to buy , reliable and cheap to insure etc. There are hundreds of cars that "could" come close and this is where knowing a bit about cars an being able to spot a piece of junk dressed up as a "careful lady owner" car is essential.
