Beautiful. That’s peak Porsche right there imho. Now is probably a good time to get out on the road.....
As for the 991 comparison, it’s all a bit subjective in the end and we all like what we like but for me, the 997 is much more enjoyable to drive. Even just sitting at the traffic lights, you feel something special around you and driving it is wonderfully interactive. Track days are laugh out loud.
Yes it’s slower than the 991, less planted and generally less capable but you’d expect that, so for me that’s all irrelevant. It’s a proper old school 911 (by my definition of that, YMMV) and wonderful to drive and own. I’ve also had all the iterations of the 991 GT/RS cars except the 991.2GT3 and they were all amazing to drive but somehow get under your skin a bit less, so they’ve all moved on and I’ve stuck with the 997.
It’s also the whole “scene” around the later cars that puts me off owning them a bit with all the BS about spec and stitching and leather dashes. The car in the video has none of that and it simply doesn’t matter.
Thanks for posting it up. A welcome distraction from these crazy days.....

I’ve said it before, if Porsche cane to the market with a 997.3 when it launched the 991, it would rightly have been shot down.
The sports car world had changed and something had to give. You can’t compete with Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini etc. with old tech. Neither could the new car be slower or less powerful; so it’s naturally going to be faster.
Rawness and involvement are far more subjective and, arguably, tricky to engineer into a modern car. Certainly a power unit like the Mezger is a unique but if machinery.
The dimensions of the car are important too. Again, Porsche had to follow overall market trends for cars to get bigger.
I can’t slate the 991 GT3 and RS cars, for the simple reason they are brilliant.
But as a dream car, it’s a 997.2 RS for me.

Digga ,shame about the presenter, these u tube guys are truly aweful to watch.
If you get a 997rs,put some good dampers on it to try and get some feel into the car,Also fidgety on b roads, great cars but still feel huge compared to the early cars and lack nimbleness.
The old design engines were/are great engines but had there limitations and flaws, this latest rs engine is something else, sadly as they are made to make bigger and bigger cars etc,i think they have done a reasonable job on the later gt cars.

Lad who works for me went to school with JWW. He lives just up the road, between me & Oulton. Didn't mind that video too much - I think he's mellowing a bit.If you get a 997rs,put some good dampers on it to try and get some feel into the car,Also fidgety on b roads, great cars but still feel huge compared to the early cars and lack nimbleness.

Interesting about 997.2 RS dampers... It's a car I'm really hooked on and probably need to get out of my system. Have to see how next few months work out first!
I think the 991 platform GT cars have been brilliant. A real evolution. It had to happen. But as you know better than anyone, speed is one thing, but the mechanical involvement of the older stuff is unique.

You should try a manual 991.2 GT3, it's a pretty honest and amazing drive. I bought mine to flip for a 997,2 RS, but 2 years down the line I still own it. 07:00[/footnote]
It’s that good.

We are in total lock-down here in Austria. I have my 997 GT3 RS 4.0 down in the garage. Just been delivered back from service at Porsche Center Munich with the new Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tyres - and I can’t take it out due to this curfew. Arghhhhh.
First world problems and all that, but you saying this makes me think I might try and head out tomorrow if I find the time. Hopefully, when all of this is over, we will both have our health. If we have the cars too it's a bonus.DT398 said:

I don't rave about many cars and I have owned 76 odd.

if the GOV don't help the self employed and covid 19 last over 6 months I'll be selling mine !!!5 million people in the s
t as it stands, but I am sure more help will come to the self employed next week. Most small self employed people help bigger companies keep running so it would be a UK melt down if no extra help given in this sector.

Totally agree with the above, mine felt so special and I part ex it for a 991GT3 (the next best thing) big big mistake. The 991 lasted just 6 months, I think the 991.2 manual is better but it misses that mechanical sound and feel, the engine may be fantastic but I do tend to think they are now a bit over engineered and too capable particularly for the road to be fun.
The 997RS didn't need to be driven fast to make you smile, listening to that engine rattle at the traffic lights was just wonderful a very special car imo.
I bought mine in 2013 for £92k I wonder if I will be able to get another for that when all this is over? .

I'm also SE and the awful Welsh Government owes me £50K which is already three months overdue..Trouble is the WG are a completely useless wasteful institution at the best of times, so this Covid-19 will only give them a further excuse for doing even less work then they do normally..5 million people in the s

ETA Just in case i forgot i need to remind everyone that the WG are a bunch of wasters cruising through life on an enormous gravy train.

I couldn't put into print what i really think of them and the way i'd deal with them as i'd be arrested under the Anti-terrorist Act.
