I have followed various tutorials on making / editing / creating routes in Google maps but none seem to do what I want.

I can make / customise routes and save them on my chromebook

I can see them on my phone

But I can't get them to then direct me nor can I remove them from the screen

What am I doing wrong ?

The difficulties you are experiencing are why there are good (all be it purchasable) dedicated pieces of software on the market.

The software I've purchased does a great job & makes sharing routes reasonably easy, as well as directing me all across Europe whether it be on my phone or dedicated TomTom satnav.

I did look at a few apps - Best Biking Roads for one - but it doesn't work very well either

I purchased myrouteapp for making routes. The guys who own it developed the freeware program TYRE which I used for years for free. So when they developed their new cloud based software I was confident it would be good & didn't mind paying on spec before it was even released for, what was then, a one off payment for a lifetime licence.

You can import routes in a variety of file formats, create routes (or tracks) with a few or tons of waypoints , alter them, then save them in a variety of formats for different sat navs. Even share (allow others to access) them. You can access them, because it's all stored in the cloud, anywhere on phone, PC, Mac, iPad etc & load them to Garmins, TomTom etc.

They also do their own phone based navigation app with turn by turn commands that you can load the routes into.

Another vote for MyRouteApp. It's what we use for the Old Gits trips and works for everyone..

I use https://www.myrouteapp.com/routelab and it's epic.

Set route in Google Maps (Streetview) on laptop > duplicate route point by point in MRA > save in my library > export to various formats (to share) and invite mates who have a MRA subscription.

SatNav via mobile phone with a clean interface works so much better than TomTom or Google on phone.

I program #Dauwtrappers (check Insta) and export to pdf and various satnav formats.

I pay 40 euros/yr for a Gold membership.

I've used Google? Make the route on the computer, sent to iPhone and then press start. Off it goes.

thats what i was thinking, he must be cocking something up - as for other apps, what about "waze" or "calimoto" i like the fact you can make a group ride on waze and then everybody pops up on the map so you an see if someone gets stranded or takes a wrong turn etc an they can also see where you are and catch up.

Problem with Google is you'll create a great route then Google will then reroute to find a quicker boring route

What do you mean by "make a route"

I've tried by dragging, adding stops and draw a line

None work.

Dragging - it reverts back when you move it to the phone
Adding stops / draw a line you loose the navigation - even if you add navigation when you create the route

Exactly. I looked long and hard at this. Google is great if you're happy for it to choose the route. You can select no motorways and just let it get on with it and that's OK. But if you want to follow a specific route then you need one of the several tools out there. I use MyRouteApp and their associated satnav Sygic. It's easy to use, very simple to share and the satnav doesn't overheat your phone like Google Maps and it has great notifications like "next available fuel".

I'm sure there are others that are free but MRA really works.

I've added power to the bike (simple USB cable to the bars) and then plug in to a phone mount (Interphone case) and that's it.

Your other option is buy a TomTom or similar but the last thing I wanted was another thing to charge, keep up to date etc.
