Front Coffin Arm Snapped at 50mph
Discussion
Some excitement yesterday - was out in the country in my '07 Cayman helping my gf collect her van before we're all barricaded inside, and on the way out the front end felt slightly off. Checked the wheel was on, thought it might just be the tracking had somehow gone, carried on. 5 minutes into the way back, was braking slightly on a straight, BANG, wheel flailing in the arch. I saw that the wheel was no longer correctly attached (wing damaged, sill damaged, inner arch damaged, etc.). Got it recovered to just outside the garage last night, drove up this morning to give them the keys, and after some faff with a dolly got the car in to them.
They just rang, the coffin arm has snapped - presumably because the bolt that connects the wishbone shaped control arm to the coffin arm was missing.
Less than 300 miles ago I had the front wheel bearings replaced at a different garage. Now I strongly suspect they didn't tighten that nut correctly - or at all. I assume this will be very difficult to prove, but it's a (probably) £1500 pill to swallow.

Happened to us with my wife’s Scenic in 2006. Car went in for routine oil change, a week later the rear left wheel broke off on a roundabout. Strenuous denial by Renault dealer of any responsibility. Then about two weeks later we got a phone call from the dealer to come out for a chat. The service manager met us on arrival with some worksheets - the mechanic working on our car had replaced the wheel bearing under warranty but never told us.
Glad they owned up, who knows maybe yours will too. Similar bill to you but extra for a hire car for a week in France.

Since the subsequent damage is an accident, it may be possible to claim on your insurance. Loss of NCD considered of course, and increased premiums for a few years even if protected. They just rang, the coffin arm has snapped - presumably because the bolt that connects the wishbone shaped control arm to the coffin arm was missing.

You never know, but as the cause was not a road accident, I doubt it will work.I have claimed for a new motor (not a Porsche) from insurance in the past having hit a bag of cement on the road though.
