John Surtees - Ultimate Racer

There's several mate. The best known recent rider is probably Sammy Miller. He was never actually world champion as a road racer, but was in the top three in the early sixties (and very close), riding works machinary (for Mondial I think). He also won the British trials title 11 times, and was responsible for developing first the Ariel trials bikes (GOV 132 the most famous), then the Bultaco Sherpa range.
Another thought is the Jeffries dynasty. Nick Jeffries (he's the late, great "DJ's" uncle) was a works Honda trials rider in the 70's/80's, and a TT winner.
Earlier there is loads, most notably Georg Meier, who won the equivelant of the world championship (the European GP) for BMW in the late 30's and the Senior TT in '39 for them. He also won the 1938 ISDT (International Six Days Trial) for BMW- which was about the biggest prize in trials at the time. He was a works racing driver (I think with Auto Union) at a similar time.
Mike "the bike" Hailwood was also a car racer of some success (GP podiums I think), as were several others of the era.
Sad to sound like my old man, but they simply don't make 'em like they used to!!
Unless someone gives that Rossi fella a nice red car........

Noooooooo!
There are a couple of chaps that have already started to entice the worlds greatest motorbike racer across to four wheels, and I personally hope he does it in time to wipe that smug smirk of the Germans face. Luca DiMontezemelo (sp?) and Bernie have already been talking to him (allegedly).
