Hi guys, I’m building a new PC mostly to play half life Alyx on but also some work processing too.

So the spec I went with is as follows.

Ryzen 7 3700 Processor.
MSI 570X WiFi motherboard.
32MB Corsair dominator memory.
Radeon 5700 GPU.
500gb WD nvme pcie SSD.
1 TB Samsung SSD.
2 TB WD 3.5 HDD.
Corsair 570x case.
Corsair RGB triple FAN setup , in addition to the 3 in the case.

All went well with the build, the thing that took forever was the cable management, but I’m happy with it now,

Anyway powered it up for the first time yesterday, all seemed good at first, got the post bios passed message.

Then it was asking to insert the boot device, I put the flash drive with windows 10 I created, but then it seems to hang.

The MB has a debug set of Leds and these all come on during post, and then go off, which apparently indicates that the CPU, Memory and GPU are all functioning correctly.

I have managed to get into the bios, but the screen display on my hdmi connected monitor has a lot of garbled text, meaning it’s hard to read, I’ve been trying to change the boot priority to usb, but every time I make a change, and try to save the changes it hanged and I have to turn the power off to restart it.

I’m going to try a new flash drive with another new build of windows os on it next.

The one thing I have noticed is that the Corsair logo on the front is flashing red, which I know is telling me something is wrong but I don’t know what.

When I look back at video I made of the first boot up the Corsair logo was white and solid.

Am I missing something silly that I might have overlooked?

Any ideas what I could try next if the windows boot from usb doesn’t work?

I only have one other PC, all of our work stuff is Mac base, so that machine is a Lenovo lap top running Windows 8.

I did think perhaps I can attach the 1tb Samsung drive to that on a caddy and put a new build of windows 10 on that, would that work?

Any advice welcome, thanks.

First thing - have you tried a different USB port? Are you using the ones on the back directly connected to the mother board? Does it have different coloured USB ports (one may be for updating the bios - can be red). Have you tried one of the USB 2 ports (black and not blue)?
Disconnect all drives except the one you want for your OS and also can you use a display port instead of HDMI?

Thanks for the advice bud!

Yes tried all of the usb Ports on the back, ie the ones directly on the motherboard.

Also tried the one on the top of the case too, as that’s plugged in to another usb connection point on the MB.

I will try disconnecting the drives next.

I don’t have a monitor or screen with display port connections sadly!

My plan for half life Alyx was to just use the valve index, if it ever turns up that is! And just use my big tv as the hdmi main monitor.

OK - have you tried a different USB stick, do you have an old GPU you can use - we may need to get into the bios and select Legacy+UEFI as boot options. Can you strip out everything but the bare essentials?

Hi Jinx, you can stand down that man, but thanks for the help.

For some reason I was unsure the hdmi cable I was using was any good, so found a brand new one in an unopend packet!

And hey presto a proper screen with all the bios options displayed, allowed me to change the boot order, and Within seconds was installing windows OS10.

It’s all up and running now, and my god is it fast, the transfer of files from one of my drone data sets was like lightning!

I well pleased!

Oh and my comment about the flashing Corsair logo, ignore that it’s actually a feature and can be controlled from the top panel! Doh!

Here she is in all her shiny goodness!

Actually really hard to photograph, because it’s the mirrored case, so jut reflects everything!

Yep its sort of working and setup.

Just tried to use steam, all good downloaded half life 2 episode one installed it, runs, you can here the music, but the screen is just jumbled graphics looks like a driver issue!!

And now you know why we love our macs, they just work without all this driver malarkey!!

When you get to the stage you are hand editing power tables for a new bios to upload to your GPU just to squeeze an extra 2 fps you know you have really become a PC gamer........
