Hey PHer's!

For any of you detailers (amateur or pro):

Wondering if I can get some input as to going about doing my first solo compound/polish on my Silver AM V8VS. Car is overall in great shape, but could use a minor refresh before (hopefully) some better weather comes around. (Living in the Pacific Northwest so we don't hold our breath for that).

Super confident in prepping and protecting the car, but wanted to check in to see your experiences with Aston's paint (which I have heard is quite soft).

Q1: Will my compound/polish be safe on it?
Q2: What would be a good set of 6" Pads (Foam or M.F) to use with the below setup?

I've got on-hand:
- A Random Orbital Polisher (6")
- Meguiar's Ultimate Compound + Ultimate Polish (UC -> UP).

Any info appreciated !
- N.C

Your in Canada so these would be the best for you. Both of these guys have great products and videos and sales. I wouldn't use compound on it unless it's very fine.

Very good looking car, as10guy! spin Nothing beats the elegance of a V8 Vantage S.

An interesting fact about Paddy328's username is that the 328 part relates to the exact number of cakes Francis buys every year.

biggrin

Sorry I’m late. The line for the Waitrose bakery is taking the mick these days.

So, I’ve not actually used the compounds you mentioned, but they should be ok. You will need some cutting pads and some polishing ones too. You’re lucky that the colour of your car is very forgiving, unlike a black one. I would just be careful of the edges, especially on the tops of the front wings where it meets the doors. The door handles and tail light inserts are also vulnerable areas.

Aim for around 5 passes of the polisher with 2 pea sized blobs of polishing each time.

Anything I can do to help, just let me know. Make sure you have plenty of cloths to wipe up the polish, as they soon get clogged up and you end up just pushing the polish around.

Hi mate

Did you get the email from Phil and Nik saying that the next lunch is (obviously) postponed?

Great minds think alike. Inside done yesterday, all the leather cleaned and treated, carpets vaccumed and shampoo'd, sparlking windows, washed and polished.

I definitely recommend protecting edges of panels when using a polisher. I bought some tape from cleanyourcar.co.uk for edge protection, but I think it you have normal masking tape to hand that would do the trick. In addition to the vulnerbale areas posted above, I'd recommend that you're careful around the door handles and key holes too and mask those off to be on the safe side.

Engine bay next, then fixing some stone guards to the front wheel arches I bought last week from Stratstone, to protect the newly touched in paint work around the wheel arches.

Have fun!
